Deon Carstens is one of four Sharks front rowers in the Springboks squad.

His versatility will be a vital asset to coach Peter de Villiers as he can pack down at both loosehead and tighthead prop. Although he has only seven Test caps, Carstens has been around the block a few times having made his debut against Scotland back 2002, aged 23.
Now 30, Carstens has won 80 caps Super 14 for the Sharks in the for whom his surprising turn of speed has been a weapon in the souther hemisphere competition. It is however unlikely that Carstens will start a Test, barring a spate of injuries, and is destined to ride the bench - the story of his Springbok career so far.
