Former New Zealand fly-half Aaron Cruden suffered a knee injury during Montpellier's 36-26 European Champions Cup victory over Glasgow Warriors.
Montpellier coach Vern Cotter says the 28-year-old will undergo an MRI scan on Monday to find out how long he will be out of action.
"I'm not going to say anything but I hope it is not too bad. I'll wait until tomorrow to find out more," he said.
Cruden was replaced in the 68th minute of Saturday's game by scrum-half Enzo Sanga following a tackle from Glasgow's Matt Smith.
The former World Cup-winner, who has made 50 appearances for the All Blacks, is the only specialist senior fly-half in Cotter's Montpellier squad.
Cotter alternated between scrum-half Benoit Paillaugue and Thomas Darmon while Cruden was sidelined with a thigh injury in October.
Montpellier are currently second in the Top 14, two points behind division leaders La Rochelle with a fixture against third-placed Lyon to come next Saturday.
