Pau's Steffon Armitage faces up to nine months out after scans revealed he had ruptured his Achilles against Cardiff on Saturday.
The former England back-row suffered the injury during his side's 16-10 defeat in Wales as they were denied a place in the European Challenge Cup final by the Blues.
Pau confirmed on Monday that further investigation into the issue had found a rupture which will keep him out for at least six months but his absence could stretch int 2019.
The Top 14 club are enduring a tough end to the season, having lost their last two domestic games as well to drop out of the playoff places.
They also lost New Zealand fly-half Colin Slade to a hamstring injury.
Pau sit two points behind Castres in the race for the play-offs with two games remaining - a trip to leaders Montpellier and a home finale against fourth-placed Toulon.
