Redford Pennycook was delighted to get a first win under the belt as Bristol secured a hard-fought 18-9 victory over Doncaster on Friday.
After going down to an opening 37-20 loss to the Newcastle Falcons, Bristol took a narrow lead into the second period against the Knights and held their opponents at bay, despite being forced to defend for long periods.
Flanker praised the work-rate of his team-mates in the win and said it will lift confidence ahead of Sunday's home clash with the Cornish Pirates, which is being shown live on Sky Sports 3 HD at 3.15pm.
He told the club's official website: "We did really well to hold them out in the second half.
"Although we didn't have the best starts after the interval, we knew we couldn't let them get their noses in front.
"After the loss last week, it was important to get back to winning ways and get some points of the board. Castle Park is a tough place to come so we're really pleased with the result - we worked hard for it.
"Two defeats in a row might have put some strain on us, so we're pleased to get that first win under the belt. It lifts confidence and there's a strong spirit in the dressing room."
Pennycook switched to blindside flanker for the game after Bristol lost James Grindal and Iain Grieve prior to kick-off.
He added: "I enjoyed playing at six - I've played there before. We've got versatile players and everyone is chipping in together at the moment.
"We have plenty of injuries but we're not looking for excuses - we have good strength in depth and the players that have come in have done a good job."
