Australia have set a new unofficial world record of 1,208 for the largest rugby scrum, breaking England's record of 1,008.

More than 1,200 rugby fans turned out to ANZ Stadium ahead of Saturday's opening Bledisloe Cup match between Australia and New Zealand to attempt the feat which will need to be verified by Guinness World Records.

Wallaby legends John Eales, George Gregan, Tim Horan, Phil Kearns, Greg Martin and Rod Kafer and netball great Liz Ellis joined the participants to set the unofficial world record.

England originally held the record after 1,008 people packed down at Twickenham in 2014, but now look to have been usurped after just one year as holders.

It was not the only reason for cheering in Sydney, as the Wallabies came away with a 27-19 win over their trans-Tasman rivals in the first of two Bledisloe Cup matches.
