Tyler Bleyendaal kicked four penalties and a conversion and Matt Todd scored a try for the visiting Kiwis, while for the hosts Siya Kolisi's try and Joe Pietersen's three penalties were not enough.
Just nine minutes were on the clock when Crusaders were penalised for trying to play the ball after a knock on as Pietersen put three points on the board.
And five minutes later they registered the first try of the game - the Stormers winning the lineout before driving Kolisi over the line.
Pietersen scored another penalty before Crusaders fought back and after 25 minutes scored their first try of the game.
Tom Marshall slipped through the Stormers defence and although he was stopped, the Crusaders recycled and Todd found a gap to score under the posts.
The score was converted by Bleyendaal and just four minutes later he registered another penalty, before the visitors took the lead three minutes before the break.
Again it was a Bleyendaal penalty after Deon Fourie was penalised at the ruck.
After 54 minutes the Stormers temporarily lost a man after Duane Vermeulen was shown yellow for lifting Zac Guildford over the horizontal, with the penalty converted by Bleyendaal.
Pietersen scored again three minutes later before the home side were once again pegged back by Bleyendaal's boot.
The home side conceded a penalty from the scrum and the back slotted over another three-pointer to earn the win.
