Morgan: Pleased
Defensive display pleases Rovers coach
Coach Justin Morgan said Hull KR produced their most consistent display of the season to beat Castleford at Craven Park.
Rovers overcame difficult conditions including thick fog to record a 20-4 victory - their third in Super League this season.
Two tries from Daniel Fitzhenry and scores from Chev Walker and Ben Cockayne gave them an unassailable lead before Craig Huby's solitary try for Castleford in the closing minutes.
"It was a good performance," said Morgan. "I was pleased with our defensive display.
"It would have been nice to have had a big fat zero next to them at the end but we showed some good resolve, had to defend some back-to-back sets and that was very good.
"Overall it was a solid performance. Of all the games we've played this year we've had some good periods and some poor periods and I think that this one has been our most consistent.
"I was disappointed not to get a clean sheet but I put it to the back of my mind. The boys are dirty that they allowed a try in towards the end. It's a nice victory to have and when we came off, we knew we'd earnt it and the bodies were sore. Overall we were good.
"I thought Castleford were quite good and they played well last week which spurred us on the be a little bit more determined."
Morgan also singled out the half-back pairing of James Webster and Ben Galea for praise for their showing, especially as Galea normally plies his trade in the pack and is one of a number of players to have plugged the gap that will be filled by Paul Cooke's imminent return from suspension.
"I thought James Webster stepped up to the mark today and gave us some good direction," said Morgan.
"He took their line on and kicked well like a good half should. We set him a bit of a challenge in the week and he answered it in the best way he possibly could.
"I thought Ben again should be singled out. He's an experienced campaigner who put his hand up to play six and was good for us. There were some good performances."
Castleford coach Terry Matterson admitted that his side deserved to lose a contest that they were rarely in and felt that the kicking game of both sides proved to be the difference.
The Tigers caught the eye with a stunning win over Leeds a week ago but never got going and only had Craig Huby's late try to show for their efforts.
"Our effort was there but the big difference in the teams was the kicking games," said Matterson.
"We couldn't strike a blow with ours and theirs' was outstanding.
"We were on the end of some penalties and that usually happens when you're on the back foot. I'm proud though because we stuck in until the end and score a try.
"It's about Hull KR though as they were tremendous and we weren't too good with the ball. We had a good win last week but six or seven days is a long time in rugby league. Things can change fairly quickly.
"Our guys were ready for this but Hull KR were deserved winners."
