Final spot thrills Anderson

Anderson: 'courageous performance'

I'm really happy with our boys, our defence hasn't been that good for a very long time - it shows what a champion team this is. Ive got goose bumps about how good a game that was and how excited I am right now.

St Helens coach Daniel Anderson was impressed by his side's defensive performance after they booked their Grand Final place with a 10-8 success against Leeds Rhinos on Friday evening.

Leon Pryce's first-half try and three Matty Smith goals proved enough for the defending champions to overcome a spirited effort by the Rhinos at Knowsley Road.

Saints were forced to repel constant pressure in the final 15 minutes to prevent the Rhinos turning their plentiful supply of possession into points.

Goose bumps

"It was a very courageous performance from both teams," Anderson told Sky Sports afterwards.

"It was a fantastic game, credit to the opposition who I thought were great.

"We hung in there and took our opportunities tonight and I'm absolutely rapped for the boys.

"They had that period in the second-half when they were absolutely all over us and we just hung in there

Delighted

Prop Nick Fozzard exemplified Saints' performance with a tireless display that earned him the man-of-the-match award.

"Leeds came here and got stuck in, they really gave it to us from the start," said Fozzard.

"We are just delighted to take the win tonight. We're through to the final and just one step away from something really special."

St Helens now have two weeks to prepare for the Grand Final at Old Trafford on October 13, when they could face a return match against Leeds.

The Rhinos entertain the winner of Saturday's elimination semi-final between Hull FC and Wigan Warriors on October 5 for the right to face Saints.
