Matterson: Not impressed
I'm really disappointed for our fans and all the other fans because we failed to show up. That was as bad as it's been for us.
Castleford Tigers coach Terry Matterson
Quotes of the week
Castleford coach Terry Matterson blasted his side for a "total capitulation" after they were hammered 54-16 by Wakefield.
The Tigers endured a nightmare trip to Cardiff as they were torn to shreds by a rampant Wildcats outfit that has now won five games on the bounce.
Former Castleford player Danny Brough kicked nine goals as his old club conceded 50 points for the third time this year.
Matterson admitted he felt bad for the team's fans who had travelled the long distance to the Welsh capital to see such a heavy loss.
"It's hard to sum up how disappointed I am," said Matterson.
"It was all about Wakefield. I'm really disappointed for our fans and all the other fans because we failed to show up. That was as bad as it's been for us.
"We made it hard for ourselves, there are no excuses for what happened in the second half. There was no fight and that's the most disappointing part. We lost some guys through injury but that wasn't the reason.
"They were hungrier and faster and we couldn't even catch the ball at the end. It was diabolical.
"We've made teams work for their wins but that was a total capitulation and we gave up. That's hard for me to say but we gave up."
While Castleford are stuck at the foot of Super League Wakefield are flying high in the table and are one of the form sides in the competition right now.
Scott Grix helped himself to a hat-trick in the derby rout while Damien Blanch crossed for his first two tries of the year.
The result also banishes the memories of their 36-12 loss to Huddersfield in Millennium Magic last year, a result coach John Kear used to motivate his troops.
"It's a lot better feeling than last year," he said.
"Prior to this season we said that after last year's disappointment of the Millennium Magic for Wakefield that we would come down and put in a performance that befits the arena we're playing in and I think we did that.
"I felt that we've been building for a performance like this for a couple of weeks, and it was a very accomplished performance.
"I thought that we maintained our defensive standards although we were a bit loose occasionally.
"The pleasing thing was that the players played as though they were enjoying playing rugby league and did so with smiles on their faces.
"Winning is job number one and job number two is looking pretty. We did both today."
