Hull FC coach Peter Gentle praised his players after they came from behind to defeat local rivals Hull KR 38-20 at MS3 Craven Park.

The Black and Whites were trailing 8-6 at the break but rallied after the restart, with three tries in seven minutes turning the game around.

A penalty try for Kirk Yeaman and further scores from Jamie Shaul and Joe Arundel proved crucial as Hull FC secured their third win on the bounce.

"We had a chat and changed things at half-time," said Gentle. "To the players' credit they adapted to it very well both in attack and in defence.

"As a coach, you are never happy to be behind. We squandered good possession when we got into good territory which was disappointing."

Gentle also alluded to a message during the week that he believes further motivated the players to seal victory in the 220th Hull derby.

"We got a special message during the week," added Gentle. "I don't think the person would want me to reveal who he was.

"It was a very good message and it was well received and it certainly worked as it was a reality check for players.

Good result

"I'm pleased with the win because it was a good result for the club."

In contrast, the Robins are struggling for form at the moment and have now lost their last three matches.

But despite the defeat, Rovers head coach Craig Sandercock was pleased with the effort shown his players, especially as George Griffin was forced to replace injured second-rower Rhys Lovegrove just before kick-off.

"I was really happy we competed hard and we had no right to win to be in that game at all," said Sandercock. "To come up short like we did was disappointing.

"Rhys had a rib problem and wasn't able to play and I've no idea how long he might be out for.

"A few poor individual errors in the second half cost us big time. Other than that, it was nip and tuck for long periods and the penalty try was 50/50.

"I was happy with the way every one of my players played.

"Of course we missed the eight players that didn't play but we were in a position where we could have won that game against the odds."
