Super League: Paul Anderson happy with progress after home draw with Leeds

Paul Anderson: Saw his side have four tries chalked off by the video referee

I just hope some week someone can press the green button instead of the red one but you take the rough with the smooth.

Huddersfield coach Paul Anderson felt his side appropriately took giant steps in the 12-12 draw with Leeds at the John Smith's Stadium.

The hosts responded to their loss at Widnes last time out with an impressive display in front of the Sky Sports cameras, though for the second time they had to settle for picking up just a point at home.

They had no fewer than four tries chalked off by the video official but were given a late reprieve when Kevin Sinfield saw one of a plethora of drop goal attempts strike a post.

"If you can't win you want to draw, don't you?" Anderson said. "The result pales into insignificance compared to the steps we made from the previous week, though. The improvement was pretty remarkable.

"Our attention was good and for the main part we stuck to it. If you take the 10 minutes out at the start, I thought we were pretty dominant. I think we created enough opportunities to win five games.

"I just hope some week someone can press the green button instead of the red one but you take the rough with the smooth."

Centre Joe Wardle had two tries chalked off before finally being awarded a score on 68 minutes, by which time he was playing on the wing following an injury to Jodie Broughton.

"He's got a medial ligament injury which is unfortunate for him," Anderson said of Broughton, who had marked his first competitive appearance for the Giants with a try in the first half.

"It was a pretty good debut. You could see he was a bit nervous at the start but he grew as the game went on."

Anderson also revealed that forward Ukuma Taia had been dropped from the 17-man squad as a punishment for being late for training, adding: "If you turn up late for training, you don't play."

Leeds saw their 100 percent record come to an end but Brian McDermott was happy enough to pick up a point after what he described as a "ropey performance" on their travels.

Stevie Ward had broken the deadlock when he dived over after seven minutes but the Rhinos needed Kallum Watkins to cross in the closing stages to get them back on level terms. Sinfield twice failed with drop goal attempts, while Danny McGuire also couldn't convert an attempt at the one-pointer.

"It's not what we were planning to do," McDermott said. "Huddersfield had a lot more momentum than us and maybe they should have got another couple of tries in the first half.

"We turned a lot of ball over and I didn't think our kicking was great but I think we showed enough effort and work for each other not to feel bad about getting a point.

"Huddersfield are a very good team and we've not got a great record here so, in the grand scheme of things, to get a draw after a ropey performance is not bad but we have a fair bit to work on."
