Wakefield coach Richard Agar was more than happy to grab an "ugly win" after Paul Sykes' late try secured a 24-18 triumph away at Widnes.

The Wildcats had led 12-0 in the early stages thanks to tries from Chris Riley and Richard Moore, but were pegged back before the break by their hosts.

The Vikings went ahead by six points at the start of the second half but after Harry Siejka levelled matters again, Sykes was on hand to grab the two points on the last play of the match.

"We weren't too impressive with the ball but defended well," Agar said. "It was a scruffy game and both sides had plenty of opportunities to win it.

"But we were incredibly tough and determined although, had it gone the Vikings' way, we couldn't have had too many complaints.

"We had only one interchange left at the end and were under the pump but I was pleased with our toughness, resilience and determination.

"We conspired to make mistakes and it was nip and tuck all night, the momentum swinging either way.

"We killed ourselves at times and it was an ugly win but we'll take it."

Missed chances

The scores were level at 18-18 when both sides missed two drop goal attempts each - Danny Craven and Danny Tickle for Widnes while Sykes and Pita Godinet were off target for Wakefield.

The usually reliable Tickle was also unable to land a penalty in a frantic finish after earlier knocking over all three of his conversion attempts, including two from the touchline.

Still, the Vikings let their opponents in at the death to suffer their first home loss of the campaign.

"We should have won and a draw may have been a fair result," coach Denis Betts said. "But it was messy and sloppy and we kept giving them chances.

"We've got to take these lessons on board. Our concentration levels slipped and we switched off.

"But our full-back Jack Owens was the best player on the field and Declan Hulme also played well.

"But we had enough opportunities to win the game."

Betts revealed Kevin Brown needed treatment for concussion, adding: "Kevin seemed to get hit a bit late with a shoulder charge."
