New Bradford boss James Lowes refused to be downbeat despite his side plunging into deeper relegation trouble with a 50-24 defeat at Warrington,

Lowes, in his first match after taking over as coach from the sacked Francis Cummins, saw Gareth O'Brien and Joel Monaghan score two each of Warrington's nine tries.

Lowes, in charge at Warrington from 2008-09 until becoming assistant to current boss Tony Smith, said: "I learned quite a lot but it's not all doom and gloom.

"We were beaten by a very good side who put sides to the sword early on and they did that to us at the start of each half.

"We are in a fight but are ready for it."

Lowes, who won six trophies in eight years as a player at Bradford, added:"We played some good stuff but there are some massive areas we need to work on.

"I'm looking forward to the challenge and let's see where we are in a month's time.

"There is no quick fix, that's not going to happen.

"But we will fight all the way to our last game irrespective of our position. We made a few decent breaks and there are things to work on."

Bradford are appealing to the High Court against a six-point deduction by the Rugby League for going into administration for the second time in 18 months - but this defeat leaves them nine points adrift of third from bottom Salford with only nine games left.

Warrington's last defeat was a shock 34-28 reverse at Bradford on May 4 although they returned to Odsal earlier this month to stroll to a 46-10 Challenge Cup quarter-final victory.

Fantastic tries

They were on fire at the start of each half and boss Tony Smith said: "Some of our attack was top-drawer and we scored some fantastic tries.

"It was real entertaining stuff although our defence was a bit disjointed at times.

"We were a lot more fluent than last week and I loved watching us with the ball. The weather was great for throwing it around.

"Stefan Ratchford was outstanding, Mickey Higham was terrific and led the way in the first half and Matty Russell did some terrific stuff.

"Ryan Atkins was very strong and I am pleased for Gaz O'Brien who was very good with the ball on his recall.

"George King was very good in his first game but I feel for Simon Grix, whose shoulder popped out again and that's a setback."

Smith also had some encouraging words for Lowes and said: "I'm pleased Jimmy is back in rugby league, he's a rugby league man and I knew he was keen to return.

"But he has a lot of work to do and they need to clean up some stuff before they can go forward.

"The spirit is certainly there but hopefully Franny (Cummins) will get a job somewhere because he's a fantastic coach."
