Widnes coach Denis Betts was delighted to see his side get a reward for their efforts as they claimed derby bragging rights with a 28-14 First Utility Super League win over Warrington.

The Vikings bounced back from their loss to Wakefield last Thursday in style as they had too much for the error-ridden Wolves, opening up a 16-0 lead by the interval.

"It's been coming the last couple of weeks," said Betts. "We've had a few solid performances but not getting the result.

"To hold a nil lead for Warrington, such a fantastic attacking team, was a great plus in the first half. And then to withstand it and score more points was a great performance for a lot of our players.

"Everyone did their job. Our pack was massive and there's not a player who didn't give us something.

"We've worked hard on our defence and to get the confidence back and the momentum is just what we need at this stage of the season. We have a lot of faith in this squad.

"To keep them to 14 points was a really impressive performance from the players.

"I've thought for weeks we've played alright but been on the wrong end of the scoreboard. Tonight we are finally on the right side. We are better and are getting better and the belief is there."

Warrington beaten

The Vikings went into the game with the odds firmly stacked against them after winning only one of their previous eight games, while Warrington came to the Select Security Stadium on the back of 10 previous wins and a 72-12 thrashing of London Broncos last week.

"Widnes took their chances well," said Warrington coach Tony Smith. "We didn't take our opportunities, we didn't create enough.

"We were boring and didn't ask enough questions. Our opponents were good and took their chances.

"We stepped it up a bit in the second half but Widnes' goal-line defence was great. On the other hand our goal-line attack was poor and we need to do some work on that.

"I thought Widnes out-enthused us at crucial times and I think our team will respond and fix things up.

"We accept defeat and will work harder, improve and be stronger next week."
