Chris Chester lamented an "embarrassing" and "pathetic" performance after he saw his hopes of leading Hull KR into the play-offs suffered a major dent in a one-sided derby against Hull FC.

The ninth-placed Robins went into the contest chasing a hat-trick of wins over the Black and Whites for the first time in the Super League era, but they went down 28-0 to leave their top-eight aspirations hanging by a thread.

The defeat leaves them four points adrift of seventh-placed Widnes and two behind eighth-placed Catalan, who entertain London on Saturday, with only two games to go.

Chester's men even face the ignominy of finishing below their city rivals, who moved to within one point of Rovers courtesy of a complete performance in front of a passionate home crowd at the KC Stadium.

When asked for his thoughts on his side's showing, Chester, who was overseeing his first match as full-time head coach, said: "Embarrassing...pathetic...soft. We just got out-enthused all game, simple as.

"The season is over. We spoke before the game about creating some history and we certainly did that - 28-0.

"I'm fuming and I've let them know. I just feel sorry for the people that paid their money tonight because that wasn't acceptable."

The hapless visitors are now preparing for two dead rubbers according to their coach.

"The season is over so we might as well throw some young kids in," Chester added, looking ahead to matches against Catalan and Wakefield.

"You give opportunities to certain players and that's how they repay you. Their honesty and effort disappointed me the most."

Radford upbeat

Opposite number Lee Radford was understandably delighted by the win, although there was some disappointment at his team's overall efforts in 2014.

"You see the derby performance, you watch the St Helens game (a 19-12 win) and then you say if that team turns up every week then the competition should watch out," he said.

"I thought from start to finish we were really physically dominant. I didn't hide my disappointment after the Bradford game (a 34-28 defeat last time out) and I've not hid it in and around the training ground.

"Everybody sensed that and the response that we got was fantastic."

Radford has now challenged his players to end the campaign on a high and build towards an improved 2015 season.

"We have said to ourselves we want to send the players who are leaving out on the right note," he added.

"We want to do it for ourselves, for our fans who have come away with us all year and been outstanding.

"We have Huddersfield and Leeds and we want to knock both of those off, which will put us in good stead for pre-season."
