Super League: Late Chris Tuson try helps Wigan Warriors beat Castleford Tigers
Wigan Warrior Chris Tuson touched down a last-gasp try to deny Castleford Tigers a stirring comeback on Sunday.
The clash at Wish Communications Stadium was tied before Tuson scored the decisive try - his second of the game - to seal Wigan's 28-22 win, which lifts them up to second in the Super League table.
The Cherry and Whites came into this match having won seven of their last eight meetings with Castleford, the exception a 22-22 draw in June 2011.
On that occasion Wigan relinquished a 22-4 lead and they did likewise this time around as a wonderful score from Jamie Ellis in the second period and two more from Justin Carney revived the hosts.
Earlier, Ben Flower had opened the try-scoring for Wigan, taking Blake Green's short pass to cross, with Pat Richards adding a simple conversion.
The visitors were then rewarded for a period of pressure when Richards rounded off a flowing cross-field move before adding a second successful kick.
Josh Charnley then rose to parry a high kick backwards, leaving Tuson with a simple close-range finish.
Wigan's lead was reduced prior to the interval when Carney laid on a score for Jake Webster, who exhibited pace and strength to go over in the corner.
But Michael McIlorum was allowed to worm his way over from dummy half at the start of the second period and Richards added the extras to make it 22-4.
That sparked the Castleford fightback, and with the scores tied at 22-22, Rangi Chase struck the post for the hosts with a late drop-goal attempt.
The Tigers were made to pay when Tuson collected Sean O'Loughlin's excellent offload to cross for his second try.
The try meant the Tigers suffered a first home defeat of the campaign - but can take plenty of heart from their rousing second-half fightback.
