England international Gareth Ellis scored his first try for Hull as the Black and Whites beat Wakefield 24-6 to earn a place in the Challenge Cup quarter-finals.

The 32-year-old second rower impressed throughout as Hull took a stranglehold on the game with a spell of three tries in six minutes up to the midway point of the first half.

Scrum-half Richard Horne, another veteran in splendid form, opened the scoring after a superb offload by Ellis got full-back Shannon McDonnell running into space.

Ellis got his try following another mazy run by the ever-alert McDonnell and winger Tom Briscoe kicked ahead for Kirk Yeaman to score his 150th Hull try, after Daniel Holdsworth's pinpoint pass created an opening on the wing.

Holdsworth converted two of the tries to establish a 16-0 lead and leave the Wildcats chasing the game.

Full-back Lee Smith went close to scoring for the visitors after chasing his own kick but generally they failed to match the creativity of their hosts.

Superbly-drilled

Wakefield saw more of the ball in the second half but they lacked the imagination to crack a superbly-drilled defence and Hull duly wrapped up a comfortable win.

When replacement hooker Aaron Heremaia burst clear seven minutes into the second half he failed to find the supporting Tom Lineham, but there was no stopping loose forward Jay Pitts four minutes later when he backed up a break by Horne to register his side's fourth try.

Wakefield finally breached the Hull defence on 58 minutes when busy hooker Paul Aiton got second rower Ali Lauitiiti crashing over for a try and Lee Smith added the goal.

But Hull had the final say three minutes from the end when Pitts dived on a bouncing ball over the Wakefield line to claim his second try.
