Substitute Larne Patrick scored two second-half tries as in-form Huddersfield made it nine wins from their last 10 matches but the Giants were made to fight all the way for their 26-22 victory over injury-hit Hull KR.

It was 16-16 at half-time after a see-saw first-half at the KC Lightstream Stadium and there was little to choose between the sides until Patrick finished decisively to turn the game the Giants' way.

Rovers, who were without loose forward Neville Costigan for only the second time this year after he joined their lengthy casualty list, missed the chance to climb back into the top eight of the First Utility Super League but it was not for the lack of effort.

Huddersfield coach Paul Anderson got his way after insisting he wanted his point back after Rovers snatched a 24-24 draw at the John Smith's Stadium in February but he will know his side will have to improve if they are maintain their push for the top.

Anderson's men could hardly have made a worst start, with England forward Brett Ferres losing possession inside the first set near his own line and quickfire passing created a try for winger David Hodgson, one of five former Giants players in the home ranks.

The visitors were level inside seven minutes when skipper Danny Brough collected his chip over the Rovers defence and kicked again for winger Jermaine McGillvary, who got his centre Leroy Cudjoe over for a cleverly-worked try.

McGillvary was then denied by the video referee, who gave the green light to a try by centre Kris Welham after full-back Greg Eden had slipped the attempted tackle of Brough to create the opening.

Tit-for-tat

In a tit-for-tat opening, powerful second rower Ukuma Taia ran onto Kyle Wood's short pass for another equalising try before Rovers regained the lead through former Great Britain winger Ade Gardner - on the 350th appearance of his career - after Huddersfield failed to clear the danger caused by Kris Keating's high kick on the last tackle.

In an open, flowing encounter, both sides had tries disallowed for forward passes but Huddersfield went in front for the first time eight minutes before the break when replacement prop Eorl Crabtree was put through a gap by Luke Robinson and sidestepped his way past Eden for the visitors' third try.

Brough's second goal made it 16-14 but Rovers tied the scores for the fourth time on the stroke of half-time with a penalty and they thought they had retaken the lead early in the second-half when Gardner touched down Keating's kick only to have the try disallowed for an obstruction in the build-up.

Huddersfield, who lost Ferres with a back injury for the second-half, made the most of the let-off by going up to the other end and scoring their fourth try.

The impressive Brough was once more the architect with a kick into space and Patrick took advantage of a kind bounce to touch down for his first try.

Brough was off target for the second time with his conversion attempt but his 40-20 kick kept Hull KR on the back foot and Huddersfield clinched the victory when Patrick took a short pass from his skipper to go over for his second try 13 minutes from the end.

Hull KR grabbed a consolation score in the final minute when Hodgson gathered Keating's kick for his second try and Travis Burns converted from the touchline.
