Chris Riley ran in five tries as Warrington handed out a 58-0 thrashing to Harlequins at the Halliwell Jones Stadium.

The Wolves made the perfect start to their 2010 Super League campaign, scoring 11 tries in all as Quins were powerless to respond.

Tony Smith suffered a 60-8 hammering against Quins in his second match in charge of Warrington last March but returned the favour with interest on Sunday.

Wolves ripped into the visitors from the start and had raced into a 12-point lead with only seven minutes on the clock.

By half-time, it was 28-0 with Ben Harrison and Ben Westwood standing out in a pack superbly led by skipper Adrian Morley and man of the match Garreth Carvell.

Morley's participation had been in doubt after he spent the night at the birth of his daughter, but the forward showed no ill effects from his sleepless night.

Absences

Quins, bidding for only their second win in 14 matches, were without Ben Jones-Bishop and big guns Rob Purdham, Luke Dorn, Karl Temata and Jon Wells with Louie McCarthy-Scarsbrook suspended.

Challenge Cup holders Warrington handed Richie Myler, Ryan Atkins and David Solomona debuts but were missing the injured Chris Hicks and Jon Clarke in front of almost 12,000 fans.

Former Salford player Myler took only three minutes to make an impact when his smart inside pass allowed Carvell to charge over and Lee Briers tagged on the conversion.

Richie Mathers cut inside Danny Orr and Jamie O'Callaghan for the second try before Quins had Chad Randall sin-binned after 20 minutes.

Myler was denied a possible debut try when, attempting to receive a Mathers pass, he collided with referee Thierry Alibert.

But the visitors' relief was short-lived as Michael Monaghan darted over after a quick tap penalty.

More tries

Warrington then extended the advantage with Chris Bridge bursting through from dummy-half to score.

The gap widened to 28-0 at the half with slick passing putting Riley over for his first, but Briers missed the subsequent conversion attempt.

Warrington continued to pile on the pressure after the break and were rewarded when Riley went over again after 47 minutes following unselfish play from Westwood, with Solomona also playing a part in the build-up.

Riley finished off two more slick moves in rapid succession to score four tries in 14 minutes, before Myler got in on the act to stretch the lead to 48-0.

Briers' neat kick straight from a scrum brought Riley his fifth try after 65 minutes, before Simon Grix went over to complete the rout.

Quins did manage to hold out for the last 12 minutes, although the lively Myler had a late effort disallowed for a forward pass.

Right winger Riley became the first man to score five tries in a Super League match for Warrington, but fell one short of the league record of six, held by Lesley Vainikolo.
