Fisher: match-winning try late on
Ben Fisher proved the matchwinner for Hull KR as he popped up two minutes from time with the try that secured a memorable 28-24 Super League triumph over St Helens.
While Fisher's late heroics secured the win, winger Liam Colbon also played a starring role as he claimed a hat-trick on his return to action.
Like their opponents, Saints managed five tries, but were left to rue three missed conversions from Kyle Eastmond as they slipped to their first defeat since the opening round.
After the early sparring it was Saints who hit the front on eight minutes when Gary Wheeler touched down a Leon Pryce kick for an unconverted try.
Rovers came within a whisker of replying on 14 minutes when Shaun Briscoe was held up over the line, but it proved only a temporary reprieve for Saints as, just a minute later, Jonny Lomax could not deal with a Michael Dobson kick and Ben Galea celebrated his comeback by poaching a try.
Colbon then notched two tries in two minutes, his first arriving on 21 minutes when he was sent in by Kris Welham.
Welham played a part in the second as well, combining with Dobson as Colbon again finished clinically to extend the lead to 12 points at 16-4.
St Helens fought back and a spilled ball by the home defence allowed Eastmond in for another unconverted try on 27 minutes and two more tries before the break turned the game on its head.
After Welham was penalised for obstruction, Scott Moore touched down - with Eastmond converting - and the visitors had their noses in front at the interval as the home defence relaxed to let Francis Meli canter over with Eastmond's conversion taking Saints into a 20-16 lead.
But a see-saw contest swung again just after the restart as Colbon squeezed over in the left corner to complete his treble and Dobson produced a superb touchline conversion to see his side back in front.
Pryce and Tony Puletua were held up over the line on 56 minutes, but the pressure told soon afterwards as Chris Dean edged the Saints back ahead with an unconverted try.
That looked good enough to secure a narrow win as the clock ticked down with the visiting defence standing firm despite wave after wave of home attacks.
But a chink finally appeared just seconds from the end when Fisher squirmed over under the posts to spark wild celebrations from the home fans.
