Leigh edge past Halifax
Centurions through after Ridyard's drop goal in extra time
Leigh progressed to the sixth round of the Carnegie Challenge Cup after claiming a dramatic 19-18 win over Halifax in extra time at Leigh Sports Village.
Halifax, who were beaten by the Centurions in the Championship earlier in April, went into half-time 16-6 ahead but let their advantage slip after the break and were ultimately beaten by Martyn Ridyard's golden point drop goal.
The visitors took the lead in the 26th minute when Anthony Thackray scored the first try of the afternoon before Leigh got back on terms through John Duffy.
But Rob Worrincy and Lee Paterson both managed to touch down in the last five minutes of the half, with Patterson converting the former effort to put Halifax 10 points ahead at the interval.
Leigh fought back in the second half as first Tommy Goulden and James Laithwaite crossed the try-line, with Ridyard converting both attempts to give the hosts an 18-16 lead.
Paul Handforth then kicked a penalty for Halifax a minute before the end of normal time to ensure that the sides would not be separated at the end of 80 minutes.
And the final twist came six minutes into extra time as Ridyard settled the contest once and for all with a drop goal.
