Danny Kirmond helped himself to a hat-trick as the Wakefield Wildcats brushed aside the London Broncos with a 46-14 victory at the Rapid Solicitors Stadium.

The home side virtually had the points in the bag by half time as five unanswered tries had Richard Agar's men in firm control before Tony Rea's side were able to respond.

Free-scoring Kieran Dixon touched down twice after the interval, but Kirmond sealed his treble in the 66th minute before further scores from Frankie Mariano and Kyle Wood added the icing on the cake.

The home side took the lead early on when a free-flowing move down the right side exposed poor defending from Michael Channing, and Dean Collis supplied Peter Fox to barge over in the corner.

Lee Smith converted from the touchline, and he added the two again when Richie Mathers crossed from close range after he fooled the defence with a delightful dummy.

Collis then went off with a leg injury which forced Mariano into the right centre role. Another soft try was conceded by the Londoners midway through the first half as Kirmond went over from dummy-half.

Tim Smith came up with a special play to make it 24-0 four when he dummied, and his suspiciously forward looking pass was collected by Sykes for the converted score.

Strong play

A mix of strong play by Kirmond and poor visiting defence saw the second-rower power over despite the attention of four defenders to make it 30-0.

The Broncos finally crossed before half-time as Harry Little, who performed well on his debut, used great footwork to get on the outside of his defender and provided a sublime one-handed flick pass for Liam Colbon to dive over in the corner.

Mathers' cut-out pass almost sent Fox over for his second after the break but a great tackle by Dixon prevented him. Dixon then surged over for a try after collecting a short ball from Luke Dorn, and Grady converted - hitting the Wildcats' ice-cream van in the process - to reduce the deficit to 20.

The visitors then closed the gap further when Dixon rounded off Michael Robertson's break with a fine finish down the left for his second and 18th try of the season.

But with some great yardage carries by Fox and Ben Cockayne, the Wildcats regained their strong advantage when Kirmond ran an excellent line to collect Smith's pass for his hat-trick, and Mariano and Wood crossed late on to seal the rout.
