First Utility Super League: Wigan Warriors cut down Castleford Tigers
Wigan Warriors avenged last week's Challenge Cup defeat with a 46-6 Super League victory over a weakened Castleford side at the DW Stadium.
Wigan dominated the opening 40 minutes and ran in four tries, with Dominic Manfredi and Jordan James crossing, in between a sensational interception scorefrom Matty Bowen and youngster Joe Burgess getting in on the act.
Further tries in the second period to Liam Farrell, Michael McIlorum and Burgess saw the Warriors bounce back from two successive defeats in all competitions to claim the points.
Both coaches made a number of changes from the Challenge Cup clash with Wigan coach Shaun Wane resting John Bateman, while Sam Powell was back in the starting line-up - as was Scott Taylor.
Tigers boss Daryl Powell opted to rest a number of players with Andy Lynch, Michael Shenton, Jake Webster, Marc Sneyd and Daryl Clark all missing out, although he did have the luxury of bringing back Justin Carney.
Wigan dominated the opening stages of this contest with Bowen and McIlorum going agonisingly close, while Castleford's only attacking contribution was Carney getting bundled into touch after he used a monster fend on Gelling.
The opening try came moments later when Wigan moved deep into Castleford's half courtesy of a penalty before Matty Smith and Gelling combined to send Manfredi over to score. Smith converted.
Ten minutes later the Warriors had extended their lead with Bowen going nearly the length of the field with an interception try after he read Ashley Gibson's inside ball to perfection. Smith kicked the extras.
Wigan scored two more tries before the half-time break when Jordan James took advantage of space, before the ever impressive O'Loughlin sent Burgess over to score. Smith added one of the goals as the hosts led 22-0 at the break.
The game was over as a contest in the 48th minute when Liam Farrell raced onto a Powell bullet pass to score. Smith's again converted.
The game was flat now and the only sour part on Wigan's behalf was an injury to Ryan Hampshire as he was led from the field clutching his arm.
Wigan's sixth try of the night came in the 64th minute when hooker McIlorum forced his way over from acting half-back for his second try of the season, Smith made it 34-0.
Castleford thought they had grabbed a consolation try 13 minutes from time but the video referee adjudged Kirk Dixon had knocked the ball on in a challenge with Burgess before scoring.
Burgess capped a solid display with his second try of the night as he collected Smith's high kick to the corner, the scrum-half added the extras.
The Tigers did manage to finally cross as Gibson took advantage of a three-man overlap, as for once the visitors had the Wigan defence stretched. Jamie Ellis converted.
However, Wigan had the final say as the superb Gelling did well to get the ball back over his shoulder as he was heading into touch for Manfredi to collect and grab his second try.
Smith converted his seventh goal of the night to conclude the scoring in a 46-6 home success.
