Stade de La Mosson started life as a collection of wooden stands with a capacity of 3,000.

That capacity was gradually increased to about 18,000 in the mid-1990s before the ground was comprehensively rebuilt for the 1998 football World Cup.

It has since held semi-finals of the Top 14. Its footballing anchor tenant, Montpellier Herault Sporting Club are currently languishing in the French second division. The stadium is served by the tramway line 1.

The arena owes its name to the river that flows at its foot.
