Carl Hayman

Date of birth: 14/11/1979

Position: Prop

Test caps: 41

Test Debut: Samoa, 2001

Test Points: 5

Current Club: Newcastle Falcons

Strengths: A tall man for a prop forward (he played as a lock and number eight at school), Hayman uses his height to good advantage in both scrummaging and line-out lifting. Technically sound in all areas of the game, he also uses his considerable bulk to drive over the advantage line at every opportunity.

Weaknesses: As a sneaky player who will happily steal the ball illegally behind the referee's back, Hayman does get caught from time to time and earn himself the odd yellow card, as he did against Australia in Melbourne this year.

Likely headline(s): Henry happy with Hayman

Did you know? In 2001 he became All Black No 1000 when he came on as a replacement for Greg Somerville in the Test against Samoa, 117 years after James Allan, another Otago forward, became All Black No 1.
