Butch James

Date of birth: 8/1/1979

Position: Fly-half

Test caps: 20

Test Debut: France, 2001

Test points: 52

Current Club: Sharks

Strengths: The kingpin in the Springbok line-up, James means so much more to the team than his rugby talent. Adding to his seige-gun boot, accurate goal-kicking, visionary distribution and ferocious defence of his channel, is his magnetic ability to energise team-mates. He adds a different dimension to the Bok number-10 role.

Weaknesses: Inconsistent. Like most fly-halves that play for South Africa, James can be a world-class performer one game and then put in a rookie performance the next. He also still needs to iron out some defensive flaws.

Likely headline: 'USA get Butch(ered)'
