Scotland v Australia

Last updated: 21st November 2009

81 He's shanked it! Giteau has shanked another! Scotland get their win, but Giteau, so often the hero, has handed it to them on a plate. A kick no more than 20m from the posts and it's gone a mile to the left! The Scots players almost look embarrassed, but the party is starting all around us here! Cheers from Edinburgh!

80 Australia go through phase after phase, pounding away at the Scottish line. 13...14...15 phases, to the post! Nothing yet. 16...17...18 phases, out the ball goes, Giteau, straightens, to Cross, it's a TRY AUSTRALIA! The final play of the game! Would you believe it? But there's still the conversion to come...

76 Scotland collect the restart and carry it back to halfway. The scrum is awarded to them as well. This is where they should look to close the game out. Not oiver though...free kick Australia. Away they go...

Drop Goal75 Hard rucking, pick and go and direct approach rugby now as Scotland gain vital ground...they are 10 short and into their 7th phase of control. Then it comes for Patterson who slots the drop!! DROP GOAL SCOTLAND 9-3

73 Both teams back on the kicking game again...very careful not to make a mistake...then Gitau runs it and as the tackles come in hard, Scotland is awarded a penalty on the centre spot. Can you feel the tension? Touch found on the 22.

70 Here they go...Giteau is looking for the gap...again and again it's Giteau to a support basher...on the 6th attempt they go wide and the final pass is intercepted by Patterson and hacked away down to half way...! If not, it would have been a try.

69 Australia go full out here, every angle being explored...whernScotland force the error a kicking game ensues...and low and behold, Lamont knocks one inside his 22. This is a BIG moment for the Wallabies.

67 As Palu is take off to a great respectful cheer, the players form a scrum. Cusiter clears up to the 10. That was a long break and one senses a telling moment for one of the teams. Question is...for who? Australia on the attack; Mitchell's kick forward goes into the goal area and we'll have 22 restrat. Deep go Scotland...

66 The Wallabies in a huddle as they look to dig deep here...they have thrown away a three on one situation...in fact the Scots gave up there...but an over ellaborate pass cost them dearly. In the meantime we are seeing Palu receive attention after a very nasty looking but accidental knock on the head. We hope that he will be ok.

65 Scrum on the Scottish 22, Cusiter to feed...the third effort is a success...for the Wallabies though... as they wheel it around and Smith picks it up. Giteau taps forward...off a Scott..penalty Wallabies...quick one...out wide...Mitchell is over!!! No...it was a forward pass...Murrayfield goes bananas.

62 Giteau, as always snipes...Cooper kicks for the corner but Rory Lamont is in position. Not out...Aus on the attack, this is where they are dangerous. They are back inside the Scottish 22 where they are met by ferocious, desperate tackling...that pays off serious dividents as the ball is dilodged and a scrum comes for the home team.

60 The turn over comes and Giteau thinks it wise to stick it into touch inside the Scottish 22. The tackling in this game just got more intense....both teams feeling the love. Scotland takes and clears.

58 Giteau sticks it out on the full from the restart...Cusiter feeds on halfway. Mean Aussie tackling stops them dead and the forced kick is taken cleanly by Ashley-Cooper who finds touch back on halfway.

Penalty56 PENALTY SCOTLAND 6-3

55 Patient direct rugby by the Celts...then the mistake come and the Wallabies run from deep...Morrison intercepts a vital ball and Scotland kick ahead. Mitchell's return comes off the boot...we're on the 22. A Godman drop effort is charged down...from an offside position. He'll get a formal opportunity to score points here...difficult one again.

53 Scotland suddenly step up a gear. Nice ball in hand, clever, short passing and a safety first aproach. They work it back up to the Aussie 10. Australia wait like a pack of hounds...the mistake will come their body language suggests. The Scottish huddle and psyche each other up...let's starve them of possession they say. It's heating up.

52 Great from Scotland as Cusiter snipes and then aims for the corner where Ashley-Cooper is caught in possession. The penalty comes and Godman will have a go from the touch line. This is the way forward for Scotland. Stay on this side, keep the ball in touch, ruck and tackle hard....and Goman misses.

49 Scotland pull themselves off the floor with high fives and smiles as great defense and counter rucking hand them the ball once more. Cusiter feeds...free kick to Scotland but Simon Danielli messes it up by sticking it into touch on the full. Scotland is balancing excellent play with idiocy.

47 Scrum 5 out, Wallaby feed. A great counter shove by Scotland sees them steal the ball and hack ahead...not into touch and here come the Wallabies again. Hynes, Cooper....back inside the 22...now 10 out as the big men work it up. Wham...another Scottish steal and this time Godman finds touch....not a particularly good one but safe.

45 Smart work by the Wallabies grab another and work their way back into the Scots 22. Slowly the confidence builds, it's evident how they communicate and execute trained moves. They look dangerous, Genia snipes, feeds Elsom who snakes and powers his way over!! TMO decision pending...not given!! mmmm

44 The Wallabies grab the restrat from the air and attack sharply....Ashley-Cooper knocks it on the 22 though and we'll pack down. Tight head and Palu picks and go....good ground covered but Kepu knocks it...oh dear.

42 Moore feeds the first line-out; Genial down the line...wild passing by the Wallabies and it's Giteau who as to recover the ball...he gets murdered by Allan Jacobsen...that was high and it's the same Giteau who will get another go at goal...again he misses.

41 A vital 40 mintes ahead of us here as the Wallabies look to clinch what they would think is their game. Scotland on the other hand will come out thinking they're in with a real chance here....and away we are for the second half.

40 More kicks ladies and gents and it's Giteau who wins with a well judged kick into touch inside the Scots 22. Free kick to the Wallabies...Palu smashes it up..they're 5 short. Giteau shows it this way and that and when the support runners fail to break through, Giteau has a pot shot...the drop kick sails wide...and a poor half ends right there. Well, the Wallabies who look better with ball in hand kiick all the time. The Scots tackle nicely but lack the penetration to get behind the advantage line. Join us in a few minutes to see how this develops.

37 Giteau missed that one...from pretty much in front. Back in play Godman feeds Morrison who lays it back...now Godman goes high, Genia feeds Mitchell who's kick rolls too long. Clap..clap

35 The Wallabies get the penalty at the scrum and again Giteau will have a go.

34 Now Aus keep it in hand...Giteau the master mind as Mitchell has a good run down the left, Palu goes through the middle and Cooper carries it to within 10 metres from the goal line. Scrum down, Aus to feed.

32 So many kicks...fly-half to fullback, the winger to the retreating fly-half and so on...Murrayfield boo's..then Godman runs one back and chips forward. He falls hard...bang...that looks like whiplash from here....and the end result is a scrum on the Wallaby 10. Rugby sometimes looks ugly...it's simply not cricket.

30 Line-out inside the Scotts 22, they work it well and get the forward movement, space for Cusiter to bang it high. Aus up to it and Giteau sticks it back into touch after a great run by Ashley-Cooper.

Penalty28 PENALTY SCOTLAND 3-3

26 At the line out the Scottish drive forward get them a penalty. Opportunity for points here.

25 Australiua on the attack...again...Giteau leading the charge withg clever snipes...the chip through and again then Wallabies secure it inside the Scots 22. As they struggle, scramble and curse the penalty goes to the home team...again just reward for heavy defense. Play goes to half way.

22 The Aussies feed the scrum and aims around the short sides but it fails as the Scots rip it free and Cusiter hacks it over. Hynes gets and mounts the counter; well secureed at the ruck and now they hit to the left. Moore through the middle once more, Cooper almost through but when the Wallabies drop the ball, Scotland pounces and clears up to halfway...good, patient defense here.

20 Now it's Giteau who angles a beautiful run and feeds Moore on the burst...he's over but held up over the line. Out of nowhere the Wallabies sound a warning just how dangerous they can be when they have a sudden go.....Scotland, beware!

18 The high ball is followed and again Hynes knocks Grove off his feet, this time it's high and Godman finds touch over half way. Morrison attacks, nicely set up and back she comes...5th phase but then the turn over comes. Cooper down the right and into touch. The Scots looking to build but their efforts thwarped by good Wallaby theft.

16 Now Scotland force a penalty at the scrum...poor stuff as Godman fails touch. Adam Ashley-Cooper don't and play goes to halfway.Scotland on the attack, Godman taps it over the Wallaby defenders and catch Ashley-Cooper in possession...small knock on there and the scrum goes to the Wallabies....followed by a free kick to Gold.

14 Scotland get another free kick which they take fast...too fast. Hynes knocks Alex Grove backwards and the ball flies loose. Wallabies to put it in on the 10.

12 Scotland feeds the line-out deep inside their 22. Not out from Godman. Mitchell takes and throws it infield. When the ruck forms in midfield, Aus get the scrum, 10 outside the Scots' 22.

11 Loose from Australia as they mount attacks around the ruck; frantic passing with good intent but no direction. Solid defense by Scotland. Then the penalty comes for the Wallabies...play goes to the Scots' 22. Cooper cuts inside from a Giteau feed. Mitchell gets on the fly down the left but lamont nails him into touch to a huge cheer from the crowd.

9 Great Scottish defense hand them the penalty; it's a poor clearance but followed by a good line-out and solid drive. Scotland take it a step too far and the Aussies come away with it. Cooper to Ashley-Cooper on the right...the ball is loose at the ruck and now Smith is penalised for going offside. Godman clears.

7 Scotland looking sharp at the restart but Ashley-Cooper smashes it down field for a good touch finder. Scotland gets a free kick; they have a go but the Aussies nick the ball of them all too easily and force a line-out on the far side.

Penalty5 PENALTY AUSTRALIA 0-3

4 Giteau finds touch and at the line-out Scotland gets penalsed for pulling down. Giteau will have a shot at goal.

3 Genia surbeys what's infornt of him, swings to Giteau who aims for the corner. Scotland controls and Cusiter finds touch on half way. A Giteau high ball goes nowhere and now Scotland controls on half way. Good progress through direct running take them to the 22 where they concede a penalty for obstruction. Promising start by the Scots.

1 Godman starts the action and Genia collcts deep and smashes it down, down, down to the Scottish corner flag. Now Cusiter co0llects from the line-out and clears nicely to half way.

0 Welcome to Murrayfield in Edinburgh where Scotland will host Australia. The Scottish team will be pleased with their win over Fiji a week ago whilst the Wallabies are still smarting from the late O'Driscoll try that smashed their Grand Slam tour ambitions. Mr Deans was wary all week of what the Scots will bring to the field. Join us here in a few minutes for all the action.

Kick off is at 1715 GMT.
