Brumbies v Highlanders - Live

Last updated: 24th March 2012

Full Timefull time A terrific win for the Brumbies, taking them to the top of the Australian conference. The Highlanders are still well in the hunt,a bonus piont defeat is only a minor setback, but they'll not be happy that their ball protection was so poor. Plenty to talk about from a fascinating match, cheers, from Canberra!

80 Hooter sounds, we have time for the line-out. Here it comes, Bekhui takes, the maul... goes down, and that's it! The Brumbies have pulled it off! A 33-26win!

79 Highlanders one more shot, and they're working down the field well, breaking the gain line every time. Just now, the Brumbies starting to look tired under pressure. Ellison takes it on and the Brumbies are caught offside.

78 Here they go, in search of the fourth try... and turnover! Unreal, I never saw so much turnover ball in once game!

77 Penalty tothe Brumbies at scrum-time! Into the Highlanders 22 once more!

76 HUGE scrum for the Brumbies and they win it again.

75 Treeby accelerates into the line, then offloads... and there's an accidental offside! Scrum Brumbies!

74 Penalty to the Highlanders at the scrum. Ball into the Brumbies 22.

73 maul forms, but the Highlanders stop it and hold it up, and win a scrum.

72 Mogg lines it up from distance... but it's short again. Noakes clears. Brumbies still have decent attacking line-out though.

71 Highlanders building now, but the Brumbies defence is swarming once more, line speed and organisation superb... and a penalty to the Brumbies!

70 Great rolling maul by the Brumbies now, on and on it goes, tothe Highlanders 22, the home side sniffing blood... but it's turned over!

68 Highlanders penalty, punted into the Brumbies 22. Treeby charges into the line... but his supporters are off their feet and a penalty to the Brumbies.

67 Lealiifano turns it over now, the Brumbies are killing it at the breakdown! Mogg clears, the visitors have to rebuild.

66 Again the Brumbies looked to have turned over with Hooper, but this time he piushed the boundaries of legality a touch far... Highlanders get a penalty and a line-out near the Brumbies 22.

Conversion64 An easy two points for Lealiifano! CONVERSION BRUMBIES! 33-26!

TRY63 Highlanders change up the front row, not that it mattersmuch such has been the state of the feeding at scrum time. McCabe cuts a nice line through the defence, Alexander takes it on. Hooper now on a pick-up and he drives all the way! TRY BRUMBIES! HOOPER!

60 Highlanders win a turnover on their own 10m line. Nice offload to Ellison, but Hooper again steals at the ruck, he's been brilliant there today. Now a knock on, and the Brumbies get the scrum.

Penalty58 NOAKES PENALTY! 26-26! Replacement Fardy is penalised at ruck time now so up steps Noakes to level matters...no problem for the number 21.

Penalty55 LEALIIFANO PENALTY! 26-23! Rutledge has been penalised at the breakdown so up steps Lealiifano again from about 35 out, almost bang in front. Yes.

53 Slade is driven off the field and will be off to hospital so Chris Noakes is onto the field in his place at fly-half. We restart with a Highlanders scrum...wait, no, the visitors are penalised for an incorrect bind so the Brumbies progress into opposition territory.

52 This is not a pretty sight and sound. McCabe has just told the referee to stop the game as Slade seemed to turn his ankle badly in contact. It doesn't look good for the All Black as the medics run on. There will be a long stoppage here while this is looked at.

51 We are locked up then in Canberra with the Brumbies having the territory but the Brumbies have the line-out in their own 22. Here comes Jason Rutledge.

Conversion49 CONVERSION HIGHLANDERS, SLADE! 23-23!

TRY48 Treeby again makes yards... and he's not held in the tackle! He gets up, goes, and.... scores! TRY HIGHLANDERS! TREEBY! Under the posts!

Penalty47 Super kick from the fly-half! PENALTY BRUMBIES, LEALIIFANO, 23-16!

46 Mowen takes a brilliant catch off a high ball.Wide it goes to Mogg, but the Highlanders defence looks better organised at the moment... then they give away a penalty. Lealiifano grabs it.

Penalty44 Flags go up! PENALTY HIGHLANDERS, SLADE! 20-16!

43 Highlanders penalty as the Brumbies jump across at the line-out, so Slade can have a pot at goal...

41 SECOND HALF: Manu spills the restart, but fortunately for him it dribbles backwards. Slade goes to clear, but puts it out on the full.

Half TimeHalf time That's it for the half, the Brumbies preying on opposition slips to take a handy 20-13 lead into the break, but the Highlanders have plenty to offer.... this is not over yet!

Penalty40 He knocks it over! PENALTY BRUMBIES! LEALIIFANO! 20-13 as the hooter sounds.

38 Mogg lining up a 55m penalty here... it's centimetres short. Smith's clearance doesn't find touch though, so the Brumbies counter... and then lose it to a counter-ruck.... and then Hooper steals it back. Penalty advantage tothe Brumbies now. Back and forth momentum goes. Lealiifano lines this up.

37 Highlanders rumble at the restart.... it's gone 20m so far. inside to Treeby who is making good distance, but he's pinged for holding on.

35 Slade adds the extras! CONVERSION HIGHLANDERS, SLADE! 17-13!

TRY34 Treeby hits another line hard and makes metres, out it goes, Gear takes an inside pass! He's there... inside pass to smith and AaronSmith scores! TRY HIGHLANDERS! SMITH!

33 Ben smith hits the line hard for the Highlanders, then Manu taks it strong off the ruck. Better building. treeby now hits a line, but Hooper does brilliantly to steal at the tackle.

31 Smith and Poki combine to run the ball out of their 22, this game is really open. A chip ahead from Slade, Mogg takes it into touch. But then the Brumbies win back the ball at the line-out.

30 Brumbies 10m out now, driving hard with Moore, out to Timani again, but he's a marked man now.

28 Elementary line-out error from the Highlanders, failing to withdraw someone as another joins and the Brumbies get a dangerous free-kick.

27 Brumbies countering from a kick superbly, Speight tearing through. McCabe now, to 5m out... and the Brumbies are pinged for going off their feet.

25 Ellison spills a short pass and McCabe fires it out wide to Timani's wing! But there's only a flanker there, who is bundled into touch.

Penalty24 Easy. PENALTY HIGHLANDERS! SLADE! 17-6!

23 Highlanders get a penalty now for not rolling away... finally something goes their way! Slade lines it up...

Penalty21 Over it goes! PENALTY BRUMBIES, LEALIIFANO, 17-3!

20 Steaming break by Lealiifano! He's left all his support behind as well, Moore gets there, but he can't take the pass as contact comes to him. Highlanders still have the ball, but the Brumbies look dangerous every time they get it... and we have a penalty for an early tackle on Moore! So the Brumbies could open up a two-score lead here!

18 Hore makes a break through the middle... out it goes wide right, but a penalty against Chris King. It's not going the visitors' way.

Conversion16 Lealiifano adds the extras! CONVERSION BRUMBIES, LEALIIFANO, 14-3!

TRY15 Highlanders still dominating possession, but another turnover, wide it goes and the Brumbies attacking well down the left, Timani has it... it's another try! TRY BRUMBIES, TIMANI!

13 Haskell comes onto a ball at pace now and can't control it - he's not having a great start so far.

12 Highlanders get a penalty at the scrum, and Smith goes quickly. He works his way up well and reclaims it from a pop pass, but Haskell wanders in front of him and there's an accidental offside...

10 A stoppage here while an injured HIghlander is treated... can'tseewho it is from here. There's also a long and protracted chat going on between the front rows and referee on scrum techniques.

Drop Goal8 Highlanders working themselves into the sameposition as they were when they coughed up the try. Brumbies looked well-drilled at fringe defence... Slade goes for a drop goal... over! DROP GOAL HIGHLANDERS! 7-3

Conversion5 LEALIIFANO CONVERSION! 7-0! Simple kick.

TRY4 TOMANE TRY! 5-0! Intercept! The Highlanders were looking strong in the 22 until a loose pass found Tomane, who ran the length with no one coming close.

3 A fumble from Pat McCabe ends that passage though and here come the Highlanders now in the home 22. Boy they have made some metres in no time at all.

Kick-off Late change for the Brumbies sees Ian Prior in for Nic White at the base. Here we go then with the hosts starting sprightly and up to the opposition 22.

Team news Brumbies name lock Sam Carter and scrum-half Nic White in their starting XV while the Highlanders are missing John Hardie and Adam Thomson. Chris King comes back into the front-row and replaces Ma'afu Fia while Culum Retallick, Doug Tietjens and James Haskell all make their starting debuts for the season. Aaron Smith is preferred at 9.

Welcome Hello from Canberra Stadium for our third live coverage of the day. The Highlanders are in town today and looking for their fifth straight victory over the season after a good start to date. Meanwhile the Brumbies have done well so far despite what is a young and inexperienced side being coached by Jake White. Stay tuned for the team news.
