Wales v Italy - Live

Last updated: 1st February 2014

Full Time WALES 23-15 ITALY

80 Italy have one last tilt. A turnover on the 10m line gives possession to Wales...that's it! Wales hold on for victory, but they were given a fright. Warren Gatland's boys will have to do better in Dublin next week. Thanks for joining us, cheers!

78 No surprises in Wales keeping it tight. But the ref takes exception to Rhys Webb delaying getting the ball out of a ruck. Italy have a scrum on the halfway line. Last chance saloon...

75 Italy throwing it about in desperation now. Wales will be happy to shut up shop and take the win from here.

Penalty73 PENALTY, WALES, HALFPENNY. 23-15. Another penalty against Italy on the deck means the gap is now beyond the crucial 7-points... -

Conversion71 CONVERSION, ALLAN. 20-15. Game on!!! Can Italy sneak a massive upset?

TRY70 TRY, ITALY, CAMPAGNARO!!! 20-13. Halfpenny throws and long pass out wide and the Italian centre snaps it up, turns on the gas and scores from 90m out. That's his second tonight!

68 PENALTY, WALES, HALFPENNY. 20-8. Adam Jones wins the penalty and Halfpenny hits the target from 40m.

66 The crowd rises as Sam Warburton comes on for Dan Lydiate. Expect Wales to pick up the tempo in the last quarter.

64 It's all Italy at the moment. It's been a long time since Wales had the ball for any significant period of time. A sweeping backline moves comes to an end as North tackles the charging Campagnaro and Faletau forces the penalty.

62 Italy mixing the sublime with the pretty average here. Campagnaro skips past a few in midfield but then spills it in contact, just when it looked like he had unlocked the Welsh defence.

60 So frustrating for Italy! The big blue maul rumbles towards the Welsh line off a 5m line-out but Parisse throws a poor pass to Gori, who drops it. A golden opportunity is lost

58 The benches are to beginning to come into play as Coombs comes on for Charteris and Minto replaces Bergamasco.

56 Priestland breaks and hands off two defenders as he heads for the corner. He throws a wild pass inside but Bergamasco drops it over his tryline! Luckily an Italian boot hoofs it into touch...

54 The game is opening up. Campagnaro charges down a Priestland clearance. McLeaen breaks but his pass inside is intercepted by Priestland who cleans up after his mistake - but that could have been dangerous.

53 Penalty against Bergamasco for going off his feet. That's a big call against the visitors who were making ground deep in the home 22.

52 Italy are back on the attack thanks to a break from Zanni with Geldenhuys up in support on the Welsh 22.

50 Wales are given a let-off as Allan hits the post from a penalty (for entering the maul from the side). The Italian fly-half has now missed 5 points.

48 Castrogiovanni earns a penalty for Italy at the next engage. Allan finds touch on the Welsh 22.

47 A good comeback from Wales at scrum time as they wheel the Italian around to win the feed on the Italian 10m line

45 Halfpenny misses a shot at goal from long range after Parisse is penalised for obstruction.

44 Allan misses the conversion from out wide. 17-8 it remains.

TRY41 TRY, ITALY, CAMPAGNARO! 17-8. Italy turn it over on their 22 and build up to halfway. Campagnaro feeds Sarto, who bolts down the tocuhline before chipping ahead. Campagnaro has the gas to win the footrace and score! The TMO confirms the try, despite what seemed like a forward pass from Campagnaro in the build up!

41 Here we go for the second half! Priestland goes long. Gori looks to kick it out but doesn't get much on it. Wales will attack from a line-out.

Half Time HALF TIME: WALES 17-3 ITALY

40 That's it for the first half. The hosts' second try just before the break has given them some welcome breathing room. We'll be back in ten!

40 Italy finish the half with a flourish as Campagnaro breaks down the right touchline before chipping ahead for the chasing Esposito. Williams gets back in time to dot down though.

Conversion39 CONVERSION, HALFPENNY. 17-3. Easy extras for Halfpenny.

TRY37 TRY, WALES, SCOTT WILLIAMS. 15-3. Jamie Roberts cuts inside Sgarbi's tackle and breaks clear. Williams is on his shoulder in support and crosses for an easy try.

34 Try to Parisse? No! Italy go left off a scrum then Gori lobs a cross-field kick back to Parisse, who collects and races home. But no, the ref calls him back for knocking on.

32 Good work from Leonardo Sarto to turn possession back over for the Italians on the deck. Half time is looming on the horizon and Italy are very much still in this game.

30 The Welsh backs looking dangerous. Scott Williams sends long pass out wide to Cuthbert, who chips ahead. Mclean is bundled into touch.

Penalty28 PENALTY, WALES, HALFPENNY. 10-3. Good kick from the full-back from longe range.

27 Wales clear from the line-out and pour upfield. Bergamasco is a mile offside as Gori makes a box kick. Penalty chance for Halfpenny.

25 Two or three phases after the line-out and Allan chips over the top. It goes too far and Wales have a line-out. Priestland clears but McLean sends a brilliant kick into the corner. Italy on top at the moment.

23 Scrum penalty to Italy on their 10m line. McLean finds touch deep in the Welsh half. We've yet to see the Italian backs have a go...maybe this is their chance.

20 Wales starting to ply the pressure now. The red jerseys have been camped in the Italian half for 2 or 3 minutes but the visitors' defence is very well organised

18 Those expecting Wales to dominate are going to be disappointed. It's been pretty evenly matched so far. The one Welsh try came from a silly error.

15 Italy are doing well at the breakdown. Parisse in particular is slowing Welsh ball down. Mauro Bergamasco wins a penalty inside his own half and Italy can take play back into Welsh territory.

Penalty12 PENALTY, ITALY, ALLAN. 7-3. Easy three points for Italy after Lydiate is penalised at the breakdown. Allan splits the uprights from right in front.

10 McLean finds touch near halfway from a penalty against Paul James. Italy maul and win another penalty after Charteris comes in from the side. McLean finds touch again, this time inside the Welsh 22.

8 More pressure from Wales. McLean must hack out a long territory-finding kick so Wales can attack from a 5m line-out. Mike Phillips tries to go it alone from short range but is dispossessed. Gori clears from behind his own line.

Conversion5 CONVERSION, HALFPENNY. 7-0. Perfect start for Wales!

TRY4 TRY, WALES, CUTHBERT. 5-0. First blood to Wales, but it's a soft score. Esposito makes a total hash of a grubber kick from Priestland, Cuthbert pounces and gallops home untouched!

2 Promising stuff from Italy early on as they look to keep ball in hand. But the first penalty goes to Wales as Faletau forces Italy to hold on.

1 Here we go! Tommaso Allan kicks us off, it goes to Alun-Wyn Jones who takes it in. Wales kick and Italy look to counter from halfway.

Italy will mobilise the most experienced pack in Test history.

Weather Weather isn't an issue, the roof is closed!

taly coach Jacques Brunel has mixed youth in his backline with an experienced pack. Treviso's Angelo Esposito debuts in the number fourteen shirt. 20-year-old Michele Campagnaro starts alongside Alberto Sgarbi in midfield. Tommaso Allan lines up at number ten in a combination with Edoardo Gori while captain Sergio Parisse leads them from number eight.

Alun-Wyn Jones will lead an experienced Wales side as they begin the defence of their Six Nations crown as Sam Warburton starts on the bench on his return from injury. Mike Phillips and Rhys Priestland, who started all of Wales' 2012 Grand Slam fixtures, partner at half-back. Jamie Roberts lines up alongside Scott Williams in midfield.

Welcome Hello and welcome to the Millennium Stadium in Cardiff for our coverage of the opening clash of the 2014 Six Nations Championship! Italy have never won here and face a stiff challenge against the defending champs! Kick-off is approaching, don't go away!
