Lions v Stormers - Live

Last updated: 22nd February 2014

Full Time Lions 34-10 Stormers

80 Rub your eyes all you like but the scoreboard is not going to change! The Lions have outplayed the Stormers. An incredible all round performance from the home side has left the Stormers absolutely speechless. The forwards were ruthless and Boshoff kicked like a god bagging himself a tally of 29 points for the match. One felt that the Stormers would eventually get into the swing of things and make a comeback. When the yellow cards came the Lions way, it felt as if the time had come but it never did. The Stormers failed to score a point in the second half despite having most of the territory and possession! The Lions now travel to Loftus to face the Bulls...hmmm

Penalty80 PENALTY, LIONS, BOSHOFF, 34-10. Classic ending as Boshoff nails another penalty! And that's the end of an incredible match!

79 The Lions win a penalty at scrum time and Boshoff will line up another 3 point opportunity! This will really hurt the Stormers and should be the last act of the match.

78 The Stormers defend well and win a penalty. Groom taps quickly and passes wide. de Allende knocks on and that's the night summed up for the visitors!

77 A huge scrum from the Lions puts pressure on the visitors and they manage to a secure an attacking scrum! The Lions are over the moon!

74 Huge collision between Chrysander Botha and Ryno Eksteen with the former ending flat on his stomach and in trouble. The lions forwards pounce on the Stormers on the ground and win another penalty! Great work from the Lions pack! Boshoff kicks for the corner this time!

Penalty73 PENALTY, LIONS, BOSHOFF, 31-10. I don''t think the Stormers can come back from this. They don''t look like doing it anytime soon anyway! Momentum is back with the Lions and you can feel the Stormers side have conceded defeat tonight

70 Another penalty to the Lions! Stormers infringe and Boshoff will have another attempt! Unbelievable how the Lions won a period of 20min with only 14 men.

70 Stormers come close and again lose possession in the 22m of the Lions! That's happened several times today. The lions swing it to Boshoff who clears well!

68 Play is starting to open up now as everyone is looking a bit tired! Not so sure about the Stormers come back that I'm sure everyone was expecting!

Drop Goal66 DROPGOAL, LIONS, BOSHOFF, 28-10. Textbook play from the Lions! They worked it up with the forwards and set up Boshoff in the perfect position for a drop goal!

63 Jean de Villiers makes a great break with a show and go! He tries to offload to Aplon but is obstructed by a Lions player. They go back for a penalty from the scrum back on the halfway line. Catrakilis's kick fails to find touch!

60 A huge Gary Owen by Boshoff is not dealt with well by Vermeulen and it pops up for Combrink! He breaks a tackle and makes some good ground! The Lions go wide and now de Villiers almost does a classic intercept but knocks on in the process!! Almost a try for either side there!

57 Another passage of play where the Stormers go through more than 10 phases. But the Lions turnover and counter attack! Another turnover results in Catrakilis kicking for touch in the Lions 22m. How have the Stormers not scored in the last 10min?

54 Another yellow card against the home side! Redelinghuys is now sent off for a professional foul. Down to 13 men for a couple of minutes

54 They work through over 10 phases before receiving another penalty!

53 Faf de Klerk gives away a penalty about 45m out. Once again Catrakilis kicks for touch. They don't maul but run it instead and are getting close to the whitewash!

Penalty51 PENALTY, LIONS, BOSHOFF, 25-10. Stormers will be extremely frustrated as its been all them in the 2nd half but Lions are the ones with the points!

51 Lions will have a shot at points here. de Villiers is caught holding the ball on the ground! High fives all round from the Lions!

50 de Klerk makes a great break to give the Lions some go forward momentum. Boshoff lines up another ambitious drop attempt but it ends up short!

47 Lions win a penalty bringing them more relief! Stormers needed points there! One gets the feeling that the visitors will make a come back at some stage.

45 5m Scrum for the Stormers. Vermeulen launches off the back of the scrum and comes agonizingly close! Kolisi has another go and loses the ball with a slight knock on! Frustrating times for the visitors as the home side breathes a sigh of relief!

44 Stormers are in a perfect position here, they need to capitalize against the 14 men Lions. Just waiting as Ntubeni is receiving some treatment.

44 The Stormers set up a maul off a line out and get close! Catrakilis puts a cross kick for Kobus van Wyk to run onto to but he just can't get there! They go back for an earlier infringement. Mostert has also been sent his marching orders for 10min for illegal play!

41 And we're underway for the 2nd half! de Allende receives it and puts in a great kick into the Lions half.

40 Stormers taking a while to get back on the park for the 2nd half. Clearly some harsh words from Alistair Coetzee at the break!

Half Time Well that was unexpected! The Lions head into the change room with a 2 try cushion and a thoroughly deserved lead that is! The home side came out all guns blazing and did not take their foot off the pedal. The Stormers have been suffocated by some solid defense and the most magnificent kicking display I have EVER seen by Mr Marnitz Boshoff! The Stormers need to score first and change the momentum of the game early on in the second half if they want to win this one. looking forward to the 2nd half!

Penalty40 PENALTY, STORMERS, CATRAKILIS, 22-10. Good finish for the Stormers.

40 Scrum for the Lions in their 22m. Sirens about to go and they should be content to pop this one into touch and head into the change to await a really chuffed coach. Unfortunately they concede a penalty! This time the Stormers opt for 3.

39 Some good attacking play from the Stormers! Showing more of what they can do! But credit to the Lions who are not giving in and are defending with good first time tackles!

37 Another Lions kick just rolls too much and the Stormers have a scrum in the Lions half. They win a penalty and Catrakilis kicks for touch in the Lions 22m! They need a try here before half time!

Penalty35 PENALTY, LIONS, BOSHOFF, 22-7. He is the kicking king! Incredible strike from the Lions man!

34 Lions manage to win a penalty at scrum time. Boshoff lines up another from 40m out.

30 More good work from the Lions on defense as they halt another Stormers attack! The Lions work the ball wide and now begin an attack of their own. Combrink receives the ball wide and gets tackled in to touch.

27 Good defense work again from the Lions as they manage to force a knock on! They've managed to keep the intensity for most of the first half now. They'll have a good chance if they can keep this up into the second half!

26 A huge clearance from Boshoff goes the whole distance of the field! A slight roll to the right and it would have been just outside the Stormers tryline. It rolled straight and now its a scrum back in the Lions 22m! Extremely unfortunate for the home side.

Conversion24 CONVERSION, CATRAKILIS, 19-7. Great strike from Demetri to narrow the gap!

TRY23 TRY, STORMERS, NTUBENI, 19-5. It was good work from the Stormers pack! They set up a good maul which the Lions defended well. Ntubeni showed great strength to push his way over!

21 Some good phases for the Stormers gets in them into the Lions 22m. The Lions are caught off side and they receive a penalty in front of the posts. They've opted for the line out to go for the try!

Penalty19 PENALTY, LIONS, BOSHOFF, 19-0. I have no words. Sublime kick straight through the posts! This guy is incredible!

18 A horrendous box kick from Schreuder goes straight up in the air. Burger was caught offside and Boshoff will have another attempt from 52m out!

17 A solid scrum from the Stormers sets up a platform to attack. Schalk Burger drops the ball and they lose possession! Still not looking settled the WP men!

Penalty15 PENALTY, LIONS, BOSHOFF, 16-0. Can you believe this score line? Stormers have a lot of work to do if they want to win tonight!

14 More superb work from the Lions on defense! Nowhere to go for the visitors and they concede a penalty to the ferocious Lions! Boshoff will have an opportunity from 40m out!

13 Good strike from Catrakilis but it just goes wide!

12 Credit to the lions who are putting in some massive hits when they do defend!

12 A loose pass from de Klerk puts the Lions under pressure but van Rensburg recovers and gets a kick in before being tackled. Stormers begin to attack and are awarded a penalty several phases later! First opportunity for the visitors to get points.

10 Stormers finally manage to get their hands on the ball but it doesn't last long as they knock the ball on. Scrum to Lions in their own 22m.

Drop Goal8 DROPGOAL, LIONS, BOSHOFF, 13-0. OH MY WORD. What a kick from 50m out under pressure!! Great strike! The lead keeps increasing.

7 Lions are all over the Stormers tonight! The visitors have hardly touched the ball! Stormers manage a decent kick into touch to settle things down.

Drop Goal5 DROPGOAL, LIONS, BOSHOFF, 10-0. Great kick from the Lions 10 to extend the lead!

5 Great play from Lions as they attack strongly! And now Boshoff in the pocket from 40m back...

4 Not goods signs from the Stormers here! A fumble soon after the restart from Aplon gives the Liuons possession. The home side will be playing with heaps of confidence!

Conversion2 CONVERSION, BOSHOFF, 7-0. Great start from Boshoff who slots his first!

2 That took longer than it needed! Try is still on!

2 Peyper seems to be checking with the TMO for a forward pass now...

TRY2 TRY, LIONS, WATERMEYER, 5-0. What a start from the Lions!! Super break from captain Whitely who puts away Watermeyer for a great try! Take that Stormers defense!

0 Catrakilis gets us underway in Joburg! The Lions run it a bit before the kicking battle takes place. Lions decide to run and attempt to break the Stormers defense!

0 Lions news: Ackermann has made just two changes to the his starting line-up. In the midfield, Alwyn Hollenbach comes in at inside centre. Stefan Watermeyer shifts to outside centre, due to the injury sustained by Lionel Mapoe. On the replacements bench, MB Lusaseni is primed to make his Super Rugby debut as he comes into the squad. JW Jonker is also a welcome inclusion and will provide cover as a utility back.

0 Stormers news: Burger will pack down in an all-Springbok loose trio - alongside Siya Kolisi and Duane Vermeulen - whilst three starting players will be on Super Rugby debut, with a further two debutants on the bench for the Stormers. Former WP age-group star Kobus van Wyk has been rewarded for his outstanding pre-season form with a place on the wing and Michael van der Spuy will partner Jean de Villiers at centre in the absence of injured Bok midfielder Juan de Jongh. Argentine lock Manuel Carizza will spearhead the Stormers' line-out in his first taste of Super Rugby action, whilst fly-half Demetri Catrakilis will make his first Super Rugby appearance for the Stormers - despite being a Currie Cup regular. On the bench, meanwhile, Oliver Kebble will provide prop cover and fellow young gun Ryno Eksteen (recently named in the SA Under-20 training squad) will serve as the additional outside back - both players also being on Super Rugby debut.

0 Welcome to Ellis Park for our 2nd round Super Rugby clash between The Lions and the Stormers! lions will take a lot of confidence from their opening round victory which they snatched from the Cheetahs last week. The Stormers will be a physical and tough unit to crack.

Give George Ford the chance to shine for England, says Dewi Morris

I watched Bath v Saracens last Friday and was very impressed with George Ford and how well he controlled that game for Bath. I would love to see him play a big role in the autumn internationals and I hope Stuart Lancaster starts him for at least two of the four Tests.
