Blues v Hurricanes - Live
80 What would have been dubbed an incredibly exciting South African derby match is just another standard match in New Zealand featuring some good skill and 9 tries! The Penalty try incident definitely shifted the momentum in the Blues favour and the Canes played catch up rugby from there. The Blues defended well in the first half preventing the Canes from making any line breaks and forced the Canes to make uncharacteristic mistakes. Credit to the Blues who keep their record at Eden Park this year.
78 Conversion is missed by Barrett who has had a terrible night with the boot!
77 TRY! CANES, LEVAVE, 37-24. Credit to the Canes for not giving in! Great running rugby is rounded off with Levave crashing over in the corner!
72 PENALTY, BLUES, WEST, 37-19. Great strike from West! Canes need 3 tries in 7 minutes.
71 A solid Blues scrum wins them a penalty in kicking range. West will have a shot from just under 50m out.
69 CONVERSION, BARRETT, 34-19. Barrett converts to reduce the gap!
68 TRY! CANES, SAVEA, 34-17. Great try from the other Savea! Bateman was the man who got his arms through a tackle and offloaded brilliantly to Ardie Savea who showed great strength and pace to go all the way! Had a lot of work to do!
66 CONVERSION, WEST, 34-12. Great kick from West!
65 TRY! BLUES, TUIPULOTU, 32-17. The big lock crashes over for what surely is the nail in the coffin! Great strength from the Blues man who crashes over from close range.
64 A Promising Canes attack is stopped by good work at the break down by Luatua who wins the home side a penalty. Blues kick into the Canes half. You feel they're one score away from having this wrapped up.
59 West does well and makes a half break and gets it away to the wing! Great chance for the Blues but a chip kick is charged down by the Canes defense. Definite try on if the kick had not been stopped.
57 Conversion is missed by Barrett, really needed that one to keep the scoreboard going.
56 TRY! CANES, SAVEA, 12-27. That's the Hurricanes that we know! Perenara takes a quick penalty tap and goes wide to Coles. Coles pops inside to Barrett at pace who goes through. Savea is in support on his out side as Bauden draws the last defender and gets the pass away! Too slick. Too quick.
53 The Canes win a penalty but Barrett's touch finding attempt goes into the dead ball area...very uncharacteristic from Barrett.
50 Conrad Smith knocked the ball on at the base of a ruck just prior to the try. Scrum to the Blues right on their own line.
49 The Hurricanes have seemed to be awoken now as they start to attack with more intent! The make good ground after some strong carries! They eventually crash over! Ref just checking with TMO as well as any previous infringements.
47 West misses another one. An unusually low success rate for him tonight so far.
46 TRY! BLUES, MOALA, 27-7. Too easy for the home side. After collecting a kick the Blues throw it wide to Moala who has heaps of space! He runs powerfully and manages to go all the way! Poor defending from the Canes though.
44 CONVERSION, WEST, 22-7. West gets back on track with the boot!
43 TRY! BLUES, KAINO, 20-7. What a brilliant effort from the home side! All started with Kaino who made a half break around the ruck. The Blues kept the ball in hand before Kaino crashed over from close range.
42 The Canes get us underway for the second half! After a few kicks the Blues get possession and attack with purpose!
40 The difference in the score comes down to the penalty try awarded to the blues early in the half which ultimately led to a second try shortly after as well. The Hurricanes have in fact played most of the rugby this half but have just come up against a tough defense who've seem to have done their homework! The Canes are guilty of not being as clinical as they were last week when they got points from every opportunity. The Blues must be commended for their spirit on defense as well as the way they took advantage of the yellow card. Still any teams match up for grabs in the second half!
40 BLUES 15 - 7 HURRICANES!!
40 The Canes try one last time to get something going but Barrett unfortunately loses the ball in a tackle and that's the end of the first half!
39 West is wide with the penalty kick! Canes let off the hook. The siren can't come quick enough for the visitors who need a pep talk and time to regather themselves.
38 The Blues win a penalty as the Canes are punished for being in front of the kicker. TJ Perenara made a shambles of box kick which was the ultimate error. West will have a shot to extend the lead before half time.
36 Jack Lam is penalized for not supporting his body weight at the breakdown. Blues with a chance to clear.
35 Hurricanes start to get something going as they move forward deep into the Blues half. They shift the ball swiftly to the left wing but Dane Coles just can't hold onto a pass around his ankles.
33 Nonu throws a huge speculator out wide but it''s very much a forward pass. Wasted chance for the Blues who have defended for most of the game despite being 2-1 up in tries.
31 The Canes are still battling to get any dangerous attacking phases going and they starting to feel the pressure with a few handling mistakes as Barrett knocks on in his own half. Blues have a chance to attack now with a scrum in the Canes half.
28 Again a Hurricanes attack is brought to a stop through some tough defense. This time the Blues players manage to keep the ball trapped in a maul and win themselves a scrum.
26 The Canes are on attack again in the Blues half and Luke Braid does extremely well at the break down to put pressure on the Canes win his side a penalty!
22 The Canes attack hard but the Blues defense is resilient! Charlie Faumuina hits a ruck hard and manages to win a penalty for the home side!
19 Canes win a penalty as the Blues fail to roll away. Barrett sets up a line out for another driving maul.
18 The conversion is just a tad wide from West who fails to the add the extra points.
17 TRY! BLUES, VISINIA, 15-7. The Blues making the Canes pay! Ahki puts a great grubber through out wide for Visinia to run onto! Great try!
15 CONVERSION, WEST, 10-8. The Blues pivot makes no mistake from straight out in front!
14 YELLOW CARD, CANES, PROCTOR. Matt Proctor will spend ten minutes in the bin for knocking the ball down, fairly unfortunate for the Canes fullback.
14 PENALTY TRY, BLUES. Ref has called a penalty try! This will be one form discussion later on. But great play from the Blues who definitely deserved points from that play!
14 Nonu makes a great break after the restart! He finds Pita Ahki in support as they continue down the left flank! The ball comes back inside to Nonu deep inside the Canes half. Nonu's attempted pass to Bryn Hall is knocked down by Matt Proctor which has prevented a probable try! The ref is checking with the TMO to look for a potential penalty try!
13 PENALTY, BLUES, WEST, 3-7. What an easy strike from the Blues pivot! Sailed straight through the uprights with minimal effort!
12 Blues win a penalty after the Canes are punished for obstruction at the fringe of the breakdown. West will have his first shot at goal!
11 CONVERSION, BARRETT, 0-7. No mistake this time from Barrett who adds the extras!
10 TRY! CANES, LEVAVE, 0-5. Great driving maul from the Canes which has resulted in the first try of the match!
9 The Canes win a penalty at scrum time! This time the Canes opt for the line out instead of taking a shot at goal!
8 The Canes take the ball through a few phases but the Blues defense is aggressive and effective. Eventually the Canes lose possession through a slight knock on at the breakdown.
6 Barrett's effort hits the post! Missed opportunity there!
5 Blues fail to roll away in defense and the Canes win a penalty straight in front! Barrett should get the first points of the game!
4 Peter Saili is penalized for being off his feet and the Canes win a penalty. Barrett again sets up another line out in the Blues half.
1 West gets us underway in Eden Park! The Blues give away an early penalty and Barrett finds touch deep inside the Blues half.
0 Blues news: Livewire fly-half Ihaia West will make his first Super Rugby start tonight against the Hurricanes. George Moala is named on the left wing ahead of Tevita Li who has been stood down for a breach of internal team protocol, while veteran half-back Piri Weepu has overcome a groin strain to be named on the bench.
0 Hurricanes news: Coach Mark Hammett has again named a similar side to that which has played the bulk of the season, with the only changes injury-related. Matt Proctor will start at full-back in place of Andre Taylor, while Ben Franks' groin injury is still being monitored. Replacement hookers Ash Dixon and Motu Matu'u are also both in question. Reggie Goodes is the first choice to cover the possibility of both Franks and the hookers being unavailable, with Mike Kainga and Brendon Edmonds named as back up if required.
