Lions v Bulls - Live

Last updated: 31st May 2014

Full Time80 FULL-TIME: LIONS 32-21 BULLS

Penalty79 PENALTY, LIONS, BOSHOFF! 32-21 Penalty Lions. Boshoff knocks it over, and that is that.

78 The Lions are going to see this one out, inside the Bulls 22 and they'll take their time over this scrum. And my, they've deserved it.

Conversion76 CONVERSION, BULLS, POTGIETER! 29-21 Eight points the gap now.

TRY75 TRY, BULLS, DU PLESSIS! 29-19 It's given. Have they got enough time?!

74 The Bulls aren't done yet! Du Plessis has powered his way through the tackles and scored a super try from some thirty metres. We're checking for obstruction with the TMO - it looks good, though.

72 Potgieter misses with the conversion, and it's still three tries the Bulls need. Surely this is beyond them.

TRY71 TRY, BULLS, SMALL-SMITH! 29-14 The Bulls hit back straight away, that's a warning shot across the bow of the Lions. Super restart, Mbonabi barreled into the 22, and Small-Smith strolls over untouched. Too little, too late?

Conversion70 CONVERSION, LIONS, JANTJIES! 29-9 No problems for Jantjies with the conversion.

TRY69 TRY, LIONS, TEKELENBURG! 27-9 Stunning! What rugby from the Lions! A phenomenal breakout, all started on his own line by Faf de Klerk. Jantjies carried it on through midfield, flipped it over his shoulder to Hanekom, he was held up short, but Tekelenburg flopped over from less than a metre. Wonderful try!

66 The Bulls lose possession and the Lions almost punish them on the breakaway, but van Rensburg just can't gather the pass from his replacement colleague van der Merwe.

63 The Lions on the ball once again as they look to build phases just outside the Bulls 22. They're playing very well.

Penalty60 PENALTY, LIONS, BOSHOFF! 22-9 Boom! Over she goes again, and this one is getting away from the Bulls.

58 It's a penalty against the Bulls captain, and a great chance for Boshoff from half-way.

58 Ball slapped from de Klerk's hands by skipper van der Merwe, we're checking with the TMO.

Drop Goal57 DROP-GOAL, LIONS, BOSHOFF! 19-9 There are those important three points. Lions extend their lead to ten.

56 Oh dear, another penalty for the Lions, but they inexplicably take it quickly rather than bringing their tally beyond seven points from their rivals. It comes to nothing.

54 Smart grubber through from Hollenbach into the Bulls 22. Clever rugby.

51 The Lions again making serious inroads into the Bulls defence, but the ball is lost forward on the visitors' 10m line.

Conversion48 CONVERSION, LIONS, BOSHOFF! 16-9 Boshoff knocks over the extras.

TRY47 TRY, LIONS, HOLLENBACH! 14-9 What a riposte from the Lions! Where did that come from? The Bulls completely mess up their restart, the ball finds Hollenbach, he dummies and crashes over.

Penalty45 PENALTY, BULLS, POTGIETER 9-9 Huge Bulls scrum yields a penalty and Potgieter can level things up.

42 We're underway again, and it's a scrappy start to the second half as the Lions fumble forward and mess up another lineout.

40 Teams back out at Ellis Park, 40 crucial minutes ahead.

Half Time40 HALF-TIME: LIONS 9-6 BULLS

40 A first half of end-to-end attack draws to a close with some end-to-end kicking. All three-pointers so far as the Bulls fail to translate their dominance on the field into points on the scoreboard.

Penalty37 PENALTY, BULLS, POTGIETER! 9-6 Once more, the Bulls must settle for three points rather than five or seven as another attack breaks down.

34 Boshoff thumps a garryowen down into Bulls territory, but it's far too long. There's some more harem-scarem counter-attack from both sides, with Engelbrecht felled by a super tap-tackle on the Lions 22. The Bulls have it again as they look to take the lead.

Penalty31 PENALTY, BULLS, POTGIETER! 9-3

30 Much better from the Bulls now as forwards and backs combine to rumble on into the 22. They have to settle for a penalty, though.

27 Great end-to-end stuff at Ellis Park, both teams offering plenty attacking ambition.

24 Boshoff absolutely launches a drop-goal from inside his own half. The distance wasn't a problem, but it faded just wide. So close.

22 Great bullocking run from Marcel van der Merwe brings the bulls to within two metres of the Lions' line, before the ball is spread wide, the defence stretched, and Basson dives over in the corner. Did he get in? No. Feet in touch right on the flag. Great defence from Boshoff.

19 Oh my, what an error from the Bulls. Ndgunane hauled down a metre short of the line after great build-up work in midfield, and Visser spills it over the line.

16 Super breakdown work from Whiteley and co at the breakdown in these early stages. Yet another penalty for them, and Boshoff bangs it downfield.

13 Smart grubber into the corner from Visser sees Botha scramble into touch and gives the Bulls a great attacking platform deep in the home 22. But they spill it forward, then are penalised.

Penalty10 PENALTY, LIONS, BOSHOFF! 9-0 The pivot bangs over another one after an excellent passage of play, both teams attacking well.

7 Whiteley grabs van der Merwe in the air from that lienout, but Potgieter fails to cut the early lead in half.

Penalty5 PENALTY, LIONS, BOSHOFF! 6-0 It's a fine strike and a fine start from the home team

4 Whip-wheel from the Bulls at the game's first scrum after a scything break from van Wyk. Boshoff goes for three points from halfway.

Drop Goal2 DROP-GOAL, LIONS, BOSHOFF! 3-0 Early pressure from the hosts yield a low, unattractive three-pointer for Boshoff. Was it the right option? I don't think so.

Boshoff has the derby underway.

Teams out in Jo'burg, kick-off moments away!

Victor Matfield is at last given a rest by Frans Ludeke, with skipper Flip van der Merwe back in the second-row. JJ Engelbrecht teams up with Jan Serfontein in midfield.

Ross Cronje is named ahead of Faf de Klerk at scrum-half for the hosts, partnering Marnitz Boshoff, while skipper Warren Whiteley is back wearing eight, and Alwyn Hollenbach lines up at inside centre.

Hello and welcome to live coverage of this afternoon's all-South African derby between the Lions and the Bulls at Ellis Park. We'll be back with team news shortly.
