Lions v Rebels - Live

Last updated: 4th July 2014

Full Time80 LIONS 34-17 REBELS

80 Scrappy stuff from the Lions as loose passes drive them all the way back to nearly halfway. Knocked on and the hooter sounds, that's the game! A fine win for the Lions at home even if they couldn't get the bonus point, with Marnitz Boshoff scoring 19 points. A scrappy contest with some fine moments. The action continues in Christchurch.

79 Lions so close to the bonus, Whiteley stopped short and then Fourie can't gather de Klerk's pass. Lions do have another penalty though and they go to the corner.

78 Lions on the charge, hunting that try bonus point. Great hands from Mapoe and Jantjies as they reach the 22. Smart turnover though by the Rebels but the ball is dropped. Lions scrum.

76 Cross kick from Hegarty over to Woodward is just too much, flying out into touch. Lions lineout.

75 Rebels trying to get something out of those contest as they reach ten phases, but they're not really going anywhere. Jones with a risky pass that Boshoff nearly intercepts, but he knocks on.

TRY73 TRY, LIONS, WHITELEY! 34-17: Too much power there from the Lions with the man advantage as Whiteley strikes from close range for their third try.

Yellow Card72 YELLOW CARD, REBELS, HIGGINBOTHAM! The Rebels skipper is off to the bin after taking Britz past the horizontal and not bringing him down safely. Lions kick into the corner.

71 Incident off the ball involcing Higginbotham and Britz. Play stopped as we investigate what happened.

69 Crowd on their feet now as Britz makes another break - the big-haired forward has been fantastic since he came on. Boshoff with a grubber kick into the corner that English cleverly doesn't touch, so the Rebels have the lineout but right on their line.

Penalty68 PENALTY, LIONS, BOSHOFF! 27-17: Huge hit from the new Springbok fly-half, Lions now ahead by ten and almost out of sight.

67 More great breakdown work from the Lions as Britz gets over the ball to win the penalty. Right on halfway, Boshoff taking another shot.

Penalty65 PENALTY, LIONS, BOSHOFF! 24-17: Over it goes and the Lions can breathe a little easier leading by seven points.

65 Driving maul from the Lions wins then a penalty. Boshoff going for goal.

63 It''s the replacement hooker Armand van der Merwe who is caught from behind just before the line by Burgess, but the ruling is double movement so no try. Harsh on the big man who came so close from 60 metres out but it''s the right call.

60 Pressure on the Lions deep in their own half, but van Wyk using that left boot manages to clear. Woodward, who has been quiet, counters but there's an interception! Have the Lions scored? TMO is checking.

TRY57 TRY, LIONS, TECKLENBURG! 21-17: Lions on the attack now with Kriel and Volmink carrying well, but the pass goes backwards. Lions must start again, into the 22 they go. Mapoe five metres out, can they score? Boshoff goes and finds Tecklenburg with the offload for the try! Good work from the hosts. Boshoff converts.

55 Turnover ball for the Rebels and here they come again on the attack, reaching the 22. English dives for the line... but it's the five-metre line! Comedy moment at Ellis Park. Rebels have the scrum.

TRY53 TRY, REBELS, FAINGAA! 14-17: Outstanding maul from the Rebels, Faingaa there at the back biding his time and the driving over for the visitors' second try. They're in the lead. Debreczeni converts.

52 They go close! Higginbotham nearly there in the corner but the Rebels do have a penalty, Hollenbach tackling the man without the ball. Rebels go to the corner.

51 Good attacking scrum for the Rebels, can they turn it into points?

49 Slow ball for the Rebels and Hanekom nearly pounces for the interception. Lions then win a penalty at the ruck and have a chance to clear.

47 Territory battle won by the Lions as van Wyk's kick squeezes in by the touchline. Lucky!

45 Penalty Lions, too much power in the scrum for their visitors. Very long shot for Boshoff but he's been striking them well. This one though is just wide to the left.

43 Little ground made by either side thus far as the Rebels try to use the blindside. No gain though as Higginbotham is stopped in the tackle by Britz and the Lions have the scrum.

40 Rebels restart the match - can they turn the scoreboard around in the second half?

Half Time40 LIONS 14-10 REBELS

40 Hooter sounds as the Lions try to run it out from deep in their own half, but they lose possession. Chance then for the Rebels but Kingston loses the ball forward and that's the break. A see-sawing first half with both sides enjoying passages of dominance, but it's the Lions who lead at half-time.

40 Bad news for the Lions as van der Merwe goes off, replaced by Britz. He's been crucial in the lineout so far. Time ticking away until half-time as Kriel runs hard. Mapoe knocks on trying to take a difficult pass.

Penalty38 PENALTY, LIONS, BOSHOFF! 14-10: Great work from the Lions scrum, handing the Boshoff the chance for three more points. He doesn't disappoint.

36 Back row trio for the Rebels starting to have an influence as Faingaa and Higginbotham combine again, Rebels full of confidence. Knocked on though, so the Lions get the scrum.

Penalty34 PENALTY, REBELS, DEBRECZENI! 11-10: Three points back for the visitors as Debreczeni sends over his first three-pointer.

32 Lost by the Rebels in attack and the Lions counter, but then they knock on and Burgess tries to scamper away with the loose ball. He keeps the trend going by losing the ball forward - so we go back for the advantage. A touch scrappy.

Penalty30 PENALTY, LIONS, BOSHOFF! 11-7: It's over. Boshoff with his second penalty as we close in on half-time.

29 Good interplay from Boshoff and Hanekom wins the Lions a penalty deep inside the Rebels half. Chance to extend the lead for Boshoff as he lines up the penalty.

27 Scrum penalty to the Rebels... they opt for the posts. Debreczeni steps up but that's a howling miss from the full-back. Lions still lead.

24 Mapoe on for van Rensburg as the Lions look to respond. Turned over again though and here comes English, running the Rebels into the 22! They can't make it count, the Lions eventually winning the scrum.

TRY22 TRY, REBELS, ENGLISH! 8-7: That is a chance taken. Rebels turnover in their 22 and then tap the penalty, Burgess and Higginbotham making the space for English to race home down the touchline. Debreczeni converts.

20 Van der Merwe claims the ball and here comes the maul, thundering forward but brought down short. Boshoff with the grubber and Hanekom... drops it! Rebels body in the way as Hanekom dives for the bouncing ball but can't ground it. Big chance missed.

19 Rebels clear but back come the Lions, in their own half but enjoy possession. Penalty - Faingaa offside at the ruck and Boshoff fires it into the 22.

17 Boshoff gets the accuracy right on this one as he does find touch in the corner. Lions winning the territory battle so far.

15 Boshoff just overcooks a long kick into the corner, so we'll come back for a Rebels lineout. Good width from the visitors, but the Lions have control at the ruck and that's another turnover for a scrum.

14 Higginbotham is indeed in touch, fine work from the Lions cover defence. Lineout is long and van Wyk clears long. Lions turn over the resulting maul from the Rebels and get the scrum.

13 Rebels try to go blind but the grubber from Burgess deflects into touch. Possession back with the visitors who attack, Debreczeni straightening and unleashing Higginbotham who is just denied by a try-saving tackle! Or is he? TMO is checking.

11 So close. Cronje dinks a box kick over the top after the Lions steal the lineout, but the bounce just isn't there for van Wyk with Volmink on his outside. Rebels scrum.

Penalty9 PENALTY, LIONS, BOSHOFF! 8-0: Rebels penalised for jumping across the lineout and Boshoff lines up a long penalty. It's there! Top strike. Lions well ahead.

9 Great work at the breakdown from Faingaa to turn the ball over right on his own line. Rebels clear to touch, Lions 45 metres out.

7 Lineout won by van der Merwe and that's a thundering drive from the Lions, Kriel at the back of the maul. Stopped illegally and the Lions go to the corner from the penalty.

5 Response needed from the Rebels as the enjoy some possession and territory, but Fuglistaller loses the ball in contact. Lions scrum in their half and they run it out, van Wyk with the long kick. It's a great one, pinning the Rebels back.

TRY3 TRY, LIONS, VOLMINK! 5-0: The perfect start! Nice work off the base of the scrum from Whiteley and after slow ball the Lions recycle left, Boshoff flinging a long pass over the top for Volmink to stroll over. Boshoff can't convert.

2 Not the place to knock on for the Rebels as Smith spills the ball right under the posts. Good deep kickoff and now the Lions can pounce.

All set to go at Ellis Park with the Lions on the field. Boshoff starts the proceedings.

A slightly slippery surface on a cold but so far dry night in Jo'burg, out come the Rebels.

Rebels boss Tony McGahan has made four changes to his starting XV. Lock Hugh Pyle returns to the run-on side as one of three changes to the forward pack, with hooker Shota Horie and flanker Scott Fuglistaller also injected into the contest from the outset. In the backs, Tom Kingston comes in on the right wing, while young full-back Jack Debreczeni and fly-half Bryce Hegarty will share the initial place kicking duties with Jason Woodward on the bench. Flanker Jordy Reid returns to the matchday squad, via the bench, and will be looking to make his second appearance of the season after impressing as a replacement against the Brumbies in Canberra in Round 16, while speedster Telusa Veainu is again named as a reserve and will be hopeful of making his fifth appearance for the Melbourne-based franchise.

Lions boss Johan Ackermann has made only one change to his matchday squad as Franco van der Merwe returns to play the Rebels. The switch comes in the second-row, where the Springbok lock is back in action, having fully recovered from his ankle injury. Meanwhile, in the backline, Anthony Volmink will start at left wing, while Deon van Rensburg covers the right wing berth.
