Waratahs v Highlanders - Live

Last updated: 6th July 2014

Full Time80 Waratahs 44-16 Highlanders

Conversion79 CONVERSION, WARATAHS, FOLEY. 44-16. That is that.

TRY78 TRY, WARATAHS, NAIYARAVORO. 42-16. Can the Waratahs finish with a flourish? They certainly do and it's Taqele Naiyaravoro strolling over on the left wing.

Conversion74 CONVERSION, HIGHLANDERS, PARKER. 37-16. Two points.

TRY73 TRY, HIGHLANDERS, BURLEIGH. 37-14. Boy this one has opened up as replacement Phil Burleigh chips over the top before collecting for a consolation score.

Conversion72 CONVERSION, WARATAHS, FOLEY. 37-9. Another couple.

TRY71 TRY, WARATAHS, POTGIETER. 35-9. It does as Kepu now sets up Potgieter for an easy score as the Waratahs countered from a turnover in possession. Excellent.

69 The Highlanders have a huge job now trying to pick up the bonus-point but will not die trying as they throw it around. But will a turnover cost them...?

Conversion66 CONVERSION, WARATAHS, FOLEY. 30-9. In off the post.

TRY65 TRY, WARATAHS, PHIPPS. 28-9. The bonus-point try is scored by the scrum-half after Palu sends him over from a strong scrum. Good finish near the sideline.

62 Robinson is replaced by Paddy Ryan at prop and the latter soon packs down on the visitors five-metre. Could Horne be over for his second try off Phipps' pass? No, it is called forward by referee Walsh.

59 That is more like it from the Highlanders and Ben Smith as he breaks from his own 22 before getting hauled into touch five out. The 'Tahs soon clear.

55 Changes for the visitors as Hayden Parker replaces Sopoaga at fly-half while prop Matias Diaz and lock Josh Bekhuis also come on. 'Tahs line-out 20 out.

53 Foley misses the conversion so it's a 14-point lead.

TRY52 TRY, WARATAHS, KEPU. 23-9. The lead grows in Sydney as now Alofa-Alofa offloads to Kepu two metres out and the big prop is over. Worrying for the visitors.

50 No, is the short answer as Hooper soon wins a key breakdown turnover so back come the 'Tahs 35 out.

49 Now another fumble, this time from Beale, hands the Highlanders the put-in on halfway. Can they enjoy a bit of territory and ball as they look to respond?

46 The Waratahs are going for the kill here on the 22 as lovely interchange between Foley and Beale gets them going. Skelton is now involved before Hooper spills one. The Highlanders survive for now then.

Conversion44 CONVERSION, WARATAHS, FOLEY. 18-9. Two more points.

TRY43 TRY, WARATAHS, FOLAU. 16-9. Early mistake from Ben Smith as he fumbles a pass five metres from his own line and Folau makes him pay, taking an inside ball off Beale before his power sees him over the line.

41 Welcome back to coverage of this fixture in Sydney where Will Skelton is on for Kane Douglas at lock.

Half Time40 Waratahs 11-9 Highlanders

Penalty39 PENALTY, HIGHLANDERS, SOPOAGA. 11-9. Huge kick from Sopoaga as Phipps is penalised for hands in a ruck. A great last ten or so minutes for the Highlanders.

35 Play is on halfway again with the Highlanders about to put in after Christie holds up Hooper in contact.

Penalty32 PENALTY, HIGHLANDERS, SOPOAGA. 11-6. He takes it.

31 Encouraging for the Highlanders forwards as Smith barks them into the home 22, which results in the 'Tahs pulling down a maul. Chance for three here.

Penalty30 PENALTY, WARATAHS, FOLEY. 11-3. Christie is pinged for a ruck offence and Foley sends over the three.

28 Foley is looking dangerous on attack but the 'Tahs cannot finish five metres out and the Highlanders could break here. Buckman though chooses to clear.

25 But that's poor from Sopoaga soon after as he kicks one out on the full after good pressure in defence from the Waratahs. Home line-out bang on halfway.

Penalty23 PENALTY, HIGHLANDERS, SOPOAGA. 8-3. He makes no mistake this time though as Kepu is penalised.

21 So close from Sopoaga as he strikes a long-distance penalty attempt that drops under the bar. It does however eat up the clock as Smith nears his return.

19 Change for the Highlanders as Mitchell goes off for Ged Robinson at hooker. Smith still waits to return.

18 The Waratahs are now enjoying the majority of the ball until an excellent steal from Nasi Manu saves the Highlanders in their 22. Ominous stuff though.

Yellow Card15 YELLOW CARD, HIGHLANDERS, AARON SMITH. The number nine was clearly offside when he tried to stop the Waratahs attack. Foley misses the resulting extras.

TRY13 TRY, WARATAHS, HORNE. 8-0. A long-range score from the 'Tahs as Beale and Folau combine before Hooper and Phipps send over Rob Horne for an easy run-in.

12 End-to-end stuff and it's the Highlanders finding their feet on halfway now after some early nerves. Malakai Fekitoa almost gets through but he's just lost the ball in contact 20 out. Waratahs scrum.

8 But now it's Franklin winning a key turnover for the Highlanders in his own 22, which soon results in an away scrum on the Waratahs ten metre. First chance.

5 Positive start for the Waratahs with lock Jacques Potgieter making ground early on. The Highlanders are now turned over by flanker Hoiles on halfway.

Penalty3 PENALTY, WARATAHS, FOLEY. 3-0. No mistake from fly-half Bernard Foley as the 'Tahs take an early lead.

1 Lima Sopopaga kicks us off before the Waratahs come hard, up to the 22. And there's a penalty coming...

0 Sunshine for this one so expect tries aplenty today.

0 The Highlanders are unchanged from the line-up that beat the Chiefs in Dunedin as Brayden Mitchell and Tom Franklin keep their places in the starting XV.

0 The Waratahs have made one enforced change to their starting XV as Stephen Hoiles comes in for injured captain Dave Dennis as their blindside flanker.

0 Hello and welcome to our live coverage of arguably the game of the round in Sydney. The pace-setting Waratahs face the Highlanders today in what should be an excellent game of attacking afternoon rugby. Michael Cheika knows a win here would secure them top spot while Jamie Joseph knows a triumph would keep alive their hopes of topping New Zealand's conference. Stay tuned for the team news and then kick-off of this mouth-watering Super Rugby clash.
