Sale head coach Steve Diamond has called on his troops to translate their cup form into the league after they sealed an LV= Cup semi-final place with a thrilling 33-30 win over Wasps.

Currently bottom of the Aviva Premiership, the Sharks were inspired by the impressive Danny Cipriani as they ran in five tries at Adams Park.

A penalty score in addition to tries from Kearnan Myall, Sam Tuitupou, Tommy Taylor and Cipriani did the damage while Wasps threatened a comeback late on.

Charlie Davies and Will Taylor were both sent to the sin bin for the hosts either side of half-time, and with Wasps down to 13 men, Sale ran in three tries to effectively seal the win.

Diamond admitted afterwards that the numerical advantage had been the crucial period in the match.

"Any win that gets us to a home semi-final is going to be good for our confidence and we need all the confidence that we can get to be honest," he said. "We're rock-bottom of the Premiership and we've got to get off that.

"I think that if we can get through the semi and into a final and finish 10th we can say job done at the end of the season. "The game is such a territorial one and when they're down to 13 men you should score your tries and we scored three in that period.

"Danny (Cipriani) got a bit of direction at half-time of where we wanted him to play the game and he did that.

"He needed to forget the first half and get on with it and now we're into the semis. We've now got nine games left, five at home with Welsh and Irish away so there's seven games we can win."

Meanwhile, Wasps head coach Dai Young was left to rue his side's ill-discipline.

"I think it was an indication of where we are as a squad and what I mean by that is forget the idea of people being rested because there was nobody rested.

"We had 23 players to pick from with seven on international duty and a couple of injuries, so that was pretty much the bare bones really.

"So that was sort of a warning for the rest of the season - if we pick up many injuries then we will struggle. But in saying that, when it was 15 on 15 I thought the boys did really well.

"Obviously, when you go down to 13 men it's always going to be tough and they ended up scoring 19 points in those 10 minutes, so obviously that was the difference."
