New Zealand coach Steve Hansen hailed Richie McCaw after the All Blacks opened their Rugby Championship campaign with a 47-29 defeat of Australia in Sydney on Saturday.
Winger Ben Smith became the first Kiwi to register a hat-trick of Test tries in eight years, while McCaw notched another as the Wallabies were out-scored by six touchdowns to two.
The match was McCaw's first Test in almost nine months following a sabbatical.
Hansen said: "I am obviously very happy with the performance. It's not every day that you can come here and get 40-odd points.
"I thought both teams played good rugby and for Richie to get through 70 minutes after having his break - and everyone doubting him - just shows the character of the bloke once again.
"Aaron Cruden showed that he's a true international player of world-class ability and he led the team very well."
The All Blacks can wrap up the Bledisloe Cup for an 11th straight year with a victory in Wellington next week, which would render a third game in Dunedin on October 19 as meaningless.
Hansen added: "In the Bledisloe you have to win twice, so we haven't done anything yet.
"One of the strengths of the All Blacks team, in history, is they are very good at looking at the things they didn't do well.
"And when we reflect on this game, we'll look at the stuff we need to fix up and do better and there's quite a bit. That's my gut feeling from what I saw.
"A lot of things we did great but there's still a lot we need to tidy up."The Rugby Championship. Click here to bet.
