RFU Championship: Leeds Carnegie coach Diccon Edwards praises players after win
Leeds Carnegie coach Diccon Edwards has praised his players after they upset the odds to beat promotion favourites Newcastle 24-19.
The Falcons had been expected to secure an instant return to the Premiership, especially after finishing clear at the top of the table.
However Leeds, who were relegated from the Premiership at the expense of Newcastle in 2011, came firing out of the blocks for the RFU Championship semi-final first leg to lead 13-3 before the visitors hit back.
With 10 minutes left Newcastle led 19-13 but Carnegie struck back to snatch victory with the last play of the game.
Stevie McColl and Ryan Burrows crossed for tries for the hosts, while Joe Ford slotted over four penalties and a conversion.
Edwards told the official website: "I am very proud of the team and the way they performed.
"The crowd were fantastic for us, they really lifted the team. We have got a tremendous, loyal supporter base and they have had a tough year this season for a number of reasons but they have stuck by the players and this is a great reward for them.
"We are only at half-time in the tie but we are in a good situation."
