London Irish ran in seven tries as they crushed bottom club London Welsh 47-28 at the Madejski Stadium.

The Exiles led by just five points on the hour mark but scored three tries in seven minutes to lift them up to ninth in the Aviva Premiership table.

Prop Halani Aulika's double brought his tally to four tries in as many games, while Guy Armitage (2), Sailosi Tagicakibau, Chris Hala'ufia and Matt Garvey also crossed the whitewash for the rampant hosts.

Already-relegated Welsh were competitive for the opening 60 minutes and they took an early lead through a Gordon Ross penalty, the fly-half opening the scoring with his third attempt.

Irish's first try arrived a minute later through Armitage, the centre breaking a couple of tackles to dive over after being fed by Tom Homer.

Welsh hit back on 18 minutes when Seb Stegmann crossed for an unconverted try, and the centre turned provider on the half-hour when his initial break resulted in Nick Scott crossing in the corner.

See-saw

A see-saw encounter then swung back in Irish's favour, prop Aulika grabbing his first try before Hala'ufai barrelled over on 36 minutes to hand the home side a 19-15 half-time lead.

Aulika had his second straight after the interval, picking up and driving over from close range, but two Ross penalties in quick succession cut Irish's lead to five points on the hour mark.

Irish carried the greater attacking threat though and Tagicakibau scored the decisive try on 61 minutes when he went over in the corner.

Bath-bound Garvey then celebrated his last game in Irish colours with the sixth try before Armitage powered over for his second, with Greg Bateman adding a late consolation score for the visitors.
