LV= Cup: Bath edge out Exeter Chiefs at the Rec
Peter Stringer scored two tries on his Bath debut to ensure his new side claimed local bragging rights with a 16-6 victory over Exeter in their LV= Cup fixture at the Rec.
Ireland international scrum-half Stringer crossed twice in the space of five second half minutes to set the home side on their way to their second win in three matches in the competition.
Tom Heathcote and Henry Slade exchanged two penalties apiece as a largely uneventful first half ended locked at 6-6.
But Stringer, on as a 38th minute replacement, grabbed the game by the scruff of the neck with a two-try salvo either side of the hour mark.
Bath earned a kickable penalty on 56 minutes but opted for the line-out and although Exeter stopped the catch and drive, Stringer dived through to touch down.
Moments later, Chiefs' blindside defence was found wanting again and Stringer grabbed his second try.
Heathcote was off-target with both conversion attempts and, despite late pressure from the Chiefs, Bath comfortably held on.
It was Exeter's first defeat in this season's LV=Cup and they still have not beaten their west country rivals in a competitive match since 1978.
