The Stormers put paid to the Bulls' slim hopes of reaching the Super Rugby playoffs with a 16-0 victory at Newlands.

Frans Ludeke's side knew they simply had to win against their South African rivals but instead were shut out by the Stormers, who scored all their points in the opening half.

Fly-half Kurt Coleman kicked three penalties and also converted full-back Jaco Taute's try as the home team stretched their winning run to four matches.

The Bulls have now lost all eight away matches this season and their failure to score any points was deeply embarrassing for the three-time champions.

Wearing camouflage shirts, they fell behind after five minutes when Coleman kicked his first penalty of the evening.

Solitary try

The solitary try came on 14 minutes thanks to a midfield break by Coleman. Flanker Nizaam Carr carried the ball forward before setting up the chance for Taute to go over.

Coleman converted to get the Stormers into double figures and with little sign of replying at the other end of the field, the Bulls became more and more frustrated and were repeatedly penalised.

Their indiscretions only allowed the Stormers to move further clear with another pair of penalties, the second of which came right on the stroke of half time.

The visitors did win much more possession during the second half and spent long periods camped deep in Stormers' territory.

However for all their efforts they simply couldn't find a way to turn pressure into points, Coleman the closest to scoring again when he saw a penalty attempt strike a post.

The Stormers will look to make it five in a row  next Saturday when they complete their campaign against South African Conference winners Coastal Sharks, while the Bulls round out their fixtures on Friday night against Melbourne Rebels.
