British & Irish Lions

The British and Irish Lions ran in ten tries on their way to a 74-10 demolition of the Golden Lions in Johannesburg.
The tourists were distinctly unimpressive in their tour opener against a Royal XV on Saturday but this was a much-improved display.
Jamie Roberts, Tommy Bowe and Ugo Monye all scored a brace of tries, while captain Brian O'Driscoll, flanker Tom Croft and substitutes James Hook and Stephen Ferris also crossed.
Fly-half Stephen Jones kicked 18 points, with Hook slotting three late conversions, as the Lions posted a record win against the Golden Lions, or their predecessors Gauteng and Transvaal.
Such was the Lions' overwhelming degree of control that head coach Ian McGeechan was able to use all his replacements just past the second-half midway point.
The Golden Lions, whose build-up had been marred by the sacking of their coach and media speculation about player unrest, were blown away.
They had no answer up-front to a dominant Lions pack, and with a regular supply of ball, the visiting backs cut loose.
The win was a record success against the Golden Lions or their predecessors Gauteng and Transvaal, opponents the Lions first faced in 1891.
It was also the Lions' highest points total in South Africa since they beat South-West Districts 97-3 35 years ago.
And it put the visitors in great heart for Saturday's encounter against the Cheetahs in Bloemfontein.
More to the point though, McGeechan would have been thrilled with the contributions of players like man-of-the-match Roberts, Bowe and Croft as he begins formulating a Test team to tackle world champions South Africa later this month.
There was more urgency about the tourists than four days ago, although they suffered a seventh-minute injury scare.
Flanker David Wallace was hurt trying to charge down home full-back Louis Ludik's clearance, accidentally catching a stray boot into his ribs.
Wallace continued after treatment, but Ludik - a candidate for the Springboks number 15 shirt this season - was stretchered off nursing a serious knee injury.
The Golden Lions were in disarray, and the visitors immediately punished them through a well-worked try.
Croft and Alun-Wyn Jones took the ball up well, before slick passing saw O'Driscoll send his midfield partner Roberts over.
Jones slotted the touchline conversion, but worse was to come for the Golden Lions as they fell 14-0 behind after 11 minutes.
The home defence was again exploited, with Bowe stepping in off his wing and sending O'Driscoll across for a well-worked try that Jones improved.
The Scarlets number 10 followed up by booting a penalty, continuing an impressive opening quarter as the Lions rattled along at almost a point a
minute.
Andre Pretorius opening the Golden Lions' account with a penalty, but it was a rare home highlight.
Another Jones penalty made it 20-3, and with the Lions monopolising possession, more points were inevitable.
Roberts was a handful for the home defence, and another midfield surge by the Wales centre found a work-hungry Bowe in support, and his floated pass enabled Monye to sprint over.
And it was no surprise when Croft posted try number four, galloping clear after more incisive running and crisp passing highlighted another sparkling Lions move.
At 32-3, it was game over, suggesting McGeechan had the breathing space to make early second-half substitutions.
The Golden Lions though, belatedly replied during a one-sided half when substitute Shandre Frolick scored on an overlap, with Pretorius converting.
But Roberts' second try took the Lions close to 40 points, as Jones converted.
Bowe then posted his double, and the entire Lions bench was on by the 65th minute, but the home side could not relax as Monye sprinted over for his second try - and the tourists' eighth.
With Jones off, Hook took over the kicking duties, adding the conversion as the Lions reached 60 points.
The visitors could even afford to play scrum-half Mike Phillips at centre for the closing 15 minutes, such was their overwhelming sense of control.
Hook then scored an interception try on a richly-rewarding night for the tourists, and there was still time for Ferris to claim a breakaway try, improved by Hook.

Great performance, the G. Lions might still be one of the weaker teams we will play and a lot below what the boks will be, but you can oinly beat the team in front of you and they were excellent in attack. We were sooo much more competitive at the breakdown, the back row were excellent. A solid display by all the forwards (one worry might be Ford missing a few throws when he came on). The three players to make the biggest impact for me were Bowe, Phillips and Roberts. Phillips should be nailed on for a start after Blairs poor display in the first match (although it probably helped that the pack played better). Roberts and Bowe were close for man of the match, for me Bowe edged it from being so involved in a number of the tries. Jones played well, but not outstanding, he was better than O'Gara was in the first match but he got much better platfor/ service from phillips and the pack. O' Driscoll was very good as well. Monye was good going forward but unless I imagined it gave a few penalties away. One downside might be the defence for the try, this might be nitpicking but after the lax defence in the first match I think its the area that needs most work. But all told excellent performance from all the players, and many who started are pushing for test places (I think of those starting Phillips, Bowe, O' Driscoll and Roberts are favourites for their spots)

Well done but please guys we are now GB & Irish Lions, together lets not have the Welsh did this, the Irish did that. Once every 4 years we let go of the Me Me Me thinking. Here is a question for you all, is POC going to start in the 2nd row and so should BOD be Test captain ?

A clinical and professional display, but this should be expected from professional players, but the key that won the game was the team work, players playing for each other and the cause, although there was displays of class and ability from some individuals, the most impressive thing was how they played together as a single unit, each player knowing thier role and what is expected of them in that role. Gatand and Shauns influence paying great dividents the defending on the advantage line was superb. Being a very proud Welshman, the English contingent played an exceptional game and as there is little mentioned about them here they deserve more praise as the Irish and Welsh players would not have shined without thier hard work and participation, well done to them and all the team, more work and polishing and the Boks will wont be feeling that comfortable running out for the first test, come on the Lions, bring on the Boks I cannot wait.

Looks like the back line is more or less picked for the first test Phillips, Bowe, O'Driscoll, Roberts, Byrne all look certain to start. Halfpenny would probably be the other winger but I'm not sure how fit he is and if he will get enough game time before the game comes around, so thats up for grabs and its a toss up between O'Gara and Jones, I think O'Gara will get the nod because of his ability to kick the corners and keep teams pinned back. The forwards are much more uncertain with only O'Connell a definite starter at this stage.

enter comment... Ronan who? Stephen Jones was fantastic as usual. He did what he does for the Scarlets and Wales everytime. He may not be the captain but he knows how to order a team on the pitch.

Fantastic result and a dominant performance right throughout the team. A steady increase in performance level is what we need leading up to the first test. The Lions mangement must not allow complacency to enter the squad on the back of this result, there are always assetts of the game to improve on. The tour has started now , cant wait for the next game.

Very entertaining and a much better performance from the B & I lions, they looked like a team that's been playing together for years not just a couple of months, albeit their oponents were not the Boks so lets not get carried away boys, the real test is yet to come. Go Lions!

I realise The Boys had a great night but Stuart Barnes was wrong not to want to mention a name. As an Irish and Munster fan I might be bias but Tommy Bowe was electric. He put in the work of two men and was the pivot of every play, what a legend.

It looks like the Welsh boys are showing their worth... Roberts is a future star if not already one. O Driscol showing his class also. should be the captain! halfpenny should start the tests. And look what Stephen Jones brings to our back line... O Gara is not good enough in my opinion. The boks will target him if he was to play the tests... he's not strong enough in defence! Come on the Welsh boys!!

That was much more like it, although the opposition was negligible..you can only beat whats in front of you..Roberts looks a great foil for O'Driscoll, and Philips has nailed the test number 9 spot already i think...good contributions from everyone....Onwards and upwards!!!!

what a performance stellar opposite to the first match. forwards were immense, scrum half was super, centers ,what can you say? magic springs to mind. full back? we've got 2 good ones. wings? I don't see shane williams geting into the test side he could still come good but i think he's to small we need big men against the box's the golden lions were poor but we tore them apart and thats down to the way we played. stephen jones played very well but he had a pack that was on fire in front of him so I think that position is still up for grabs. all in all a very good day at the office bring on the Cheetahs go lions
