Outgoing fly-half Olly Barkley kicked 16 points as Bath secured a 31-10 victory over Sale in their Aviva Premiership clash at the Recreation Ground.

Barkley, who will join French side Racing Metro next week, was on target with four penalties as well as converting a score from David Wilson and a late penalty try.

Ben Skirving also scored a try for Bath, while Johnny Leota crossed for Sale in the second half.

Nick Macleod added a conversion and penalty for the Sharks, who slumped to their fifth straight league defeat and remain bottom of the table.

Barkely led Bath out in front of his home fans for the final time and with 12 minutes gone he had already given the hosts a 6-0 lead after slotting over two penalties.

Macleod responded with three points of his own, although he also missed twice, before Barkley kicked two more penalties to give Bath a 12-3 lead at the half-time interval.

Eight minutes after the restart Wilson injected some much-needed ambition into the contest, surging inside Sale's 22 before finishing the move off himself by crashing over from close range when the visitors ran out of defensive numbers.

Sale hit back after 59 minutes when concerted and patient work through the phases ended in Leota collecting a try which Macleod converted to narrow the gap to nine points.

The introduction of Danny Cipriani further energised the visitors but Sale stormed back upfield and rumbled over with Skirving grounding the ball, before scoring again through a penalty try when Sale pulled down a scrum on their own line.Sale had looked at their most dangerous when Cipriani came on, the former England fly-half almost produced a try with a clever chip into space.

Had Sale possessed more attacking composure Bath might have been in serious trouble, but the hosts ended up adding to their lead rather than falling victim to a comeback.

Sale's miserable afternoon was completed when they ended the game with 14 men after No 8 Andy Powell was sin-binned for a high tackle.
