RaboDirect PRO12: Treviso claim impressive away win against Edinburgh
Treviso continued their promising start to the RaboDirect PRO12 season with a 27-22 victory against Edinburgh at Murrayfield.
The Italian side have now won three of their opening six matches, with the latest triumph being their first success away from home.
Man of the match Robert Barbieri crossed twice for the visitors, while the rest of Treviso's points were accumulated via a penalty try and a string of kicks by Alberto Di Bernardo.
Edinburgh also scored three tries through Tim Visser, Lee Jones and Dougie Fife, with Greig Laidlaw booting the other points.
One of the major talking points of the match was the interpretation of the scrum laws by the Italian referee Matteo Liperini, who penalised Edinburgh at 10 scrums in the first half and whistled Treviso for a similar number in the second period.
Liperini penalised Edinburgh at seven of the first eight scrums and sent WP Nel to the sin-bin before awarding a penalty try when the hosts offended once again.
Edinburgh responded in fine style as Visser blazed down the wing before scoring under the posts, but Treviso regained the lead when Barbieri had pounced on an Edinburgh error and powered over the try-line.
The kicking of Laidlaw and Di Bernardo topped the score up to 17-10 at the break, a lead Treviso extended in the second half with another penalty before Barbieri charged down an attempted clearance by Richie Rees to bag his second try of the evening.
Edinburgh hit back with tries from Jones and Fife but even through the refereeing decisions were now going in their favour, with Treviso prop Alberto De Marchi being sin-binned, they could not complete the comeback.RaboDirect Pro 12. Click here to bet.
