Morne Steyn scored 25 points to help the Bulls defeat the NSW Waratahs 30-19 at Loftus Versfeld.

Steyn's haul came from a try, conversion and six penalties as the Bulls moved top of the South African conference.

The South Africans went into half-time with a lead of 12-5 and, while the scoreline suggested something of a stalemate, it came down to the Bulls not capitalising on their opportunities and they should have led by a greater margin.

Steyn allowed his side a nine-point cushion after a half hour of play, succeeding with three penalties.

The Waratahs found their way over the whitewash six minutes before the break when full-back Israel Folau beat Akona Ndungane and Ulrich Beyers to the line.

Waratahs scrum-half Brendan McKibbin failed to convert the try, while Steyn succeeded with another penalty on the half-time whistle, to give his team the seven-point lead.

The Australian franchise scored again when a lapse in defence saw replacement prop Paddy Ryan touch down.

The Bulls looked dangerous on attack until Folau intercepted a Steyn pass to advance to the other side of the field.

With the Bulls defence in disarray, McKibbin offloaded to Bernard Foley, who scored his side's second try of the evening to hand them a 19-15 lead with 20 minutes left in the match.

Replacement scrum-half Francois Hougaard, however, put his side back into the lead as he picked up a ball from the ruck, just metres from the line to score, with Steyn converting.

Steyn then converted another penalty and added a try of his own at the death.
