Tom Prydie kicks six penalties as Newport Gwent Dragons defeat Edinburgh 32-12
Tom Prydie kicked six penalties to help Newport Gwent Dragons claim a 32-12 victory over Edinburgh in their RaboDirect PRO12 clash at Rodney Parade.
Prop Phil Price scored the Dragons' only try but Prydie's boot plus three drop goals from fly-half Steffan Jones ensured the hosts ran out comfortable winners.
Edinburgh scored more tries than their opponents as Tom Brown and Tim Visser both went over, but a lone conversion from fly-half Harry Leonard was their only other score.
The Dragons went into the clash on the back of defeats to Cardiff Blues and Munster and went behind in the 11th minute when a sweeping move through the half-backs to midfield saw Visser throw a long ball out to the right for Brown to collect and score.
But the Scottish side were soon on the back foot and gave away a host of penalties within Prydie's range. The wing had mediocre displays with the boot against the Blues and Munster but was on target three times before the break to give his side a 9-7 lead.
And on the stroke of half-time the visitors gave up a try as a quick interchange at a line-out between Price and Ian Nimmo allowed the former to dash 30 metres and ground the ball.
Edinburgh did themselves no favours after the break when they gave away a penalty that Prydie gladly converted from 25 metres and, after Ross Rennie had been sent to the sin-bin for an offside offence, Jones came into his own.
He landed three drop-goals which, in addition to two more Prydie penalties, was more than enough to finish off Edinburgh, who did manage to cross the try-line through Visser. Both teams had players sent to the sin-bin during the contest, with home hooker Steve Jones and visiting captain Sean Cox being forced to spend 10 minutes on the sideline in addition to Rennie.
Jones' yellow card proved to be something of a blessing in disguise for the Dragons, however, as it allowed prop Price to capitalise on some confusion and take the line-out which led to their first try.
