Lucy Garner: Was one of three British riders to finish in the top ten

Lucy Garner finished sixth in the opening stage of the Women’s Tour of Britain on Wednesday.

The Sky Academy Sports Scholar was one of three British riders to place in the top ten, with UnitedHealthcare’s Hannah Barnes taking third and Lizzie Armitstead, riding for Boels-Dolmans, crossing the line in eighth.

The result sees Garner go into the second stage in joint seventh in the standings, 12 seconds off race leader Emma Johansson, who won the stage from Rabobank-liv’s Marianne Vos.

Johansson took the victory in a bunch finish after breakaway leader Elise Delzenne was reeled in and eventually caught with 2km to go.

The Tour continues on Thursday with the second stage taking on added sentimental value for Garner as the course takes her through her home village and within touching distance of her childhood home.
