Lions head coach Warren Gatland makes three changes to his starting line-up for the second Test against New Zealand in Wellington

Sam Warburton will captain the British & Irish Lions in the second Test against New Zealand on Saturday.

Tour captain Warburton was on the bench for the first Test but will be back in the starting XV this weekend as the Lions look to level the series at 1-1.

Lock Maro Itoje and fly-half Johnny Sexton will also start in Wellington, with Owen Farrell moving to inside centre, while Ben Te'o drops to the bench.

Peter O'Mahony led out the Lions for Saturday's 30-15 first Test defeat but he misses out on a place in the squad altogether, as does George Kruis, who started in the second row at the weekend.

There are places on the bench for Courtney Lawes, Jack Nowell and CJ Stander, who all performed well during Tuesday's draw with the Hurricanes.

Lions head coach Warren Gatland said: "We saw Maro Itoje's impact in the first Test and he will bring an edge and a physicality, as will Sam Warburton in terms of pressure on the ball.

"It's tough on Peter O'Mahony, who has done a brilliant job for us. We had to look at the bench and we felt that CJ Stander's ball carrying and defence was the right choice.

"You have to make the tough calls and pick what is the right team and the right combinations for a Test match."

Worcester centre Te'o has impressed on the trip so far but drops to the bench so that Gatland can field a pair of playmakers in the shape of Sexton and Farrell.

Gatland said: "In terms of the backs we have gone with the Sexton-Farrell combination. Both have played well and it gives us that attacking option in the 10-12 channel.

"We created opportunities in the first Test and there were a few that we didn't finish.

"There were lots of positives from the first Test but we were disappointed that we put ourselves in a position to put the All Blacks under pressure and to get back into the game, and we let it slip.

"It's important we shut him [Sonny Bill Williams] down. We allowed him too much time on the ball last week. I can't remember Sonny Bill passing the ball during the game but he got some good gain line and a couple of offloads away and gave them front-foot ball.

"We have to make sure of our line speed in terms of stopping that. It is important that we stop that and have been working hard on that all week."

The Lions need to triumph on Saturday if they are to keep alive any chance of winning a Test series in New Zealand for the first time since 1971.

Gatland added: "This is a big chance for these players to go out and show what they are capable of on Saturday night.

"For the players retained from the first Test, it's an opportunity for them to step up and to show an improvement, because individually they were disappointed, and you have another group coming in who are also desperate to seize their chance."
