Quotes of the week

I missed all of the weekend's football. I was in a drunken stupor on a stag do in Salzburg (the stag of the wedding which is forcing me to miss my team's cup final).

All I saw was processed sausage meat, oversized beer tankards, and quite a nice American girl, who I did all the hard work with and then passed out.

I got back on Monday, broken, as weak as a kitten, and desperate for something healthy. I ate a raw carrot. I was only capable of lying on the sofa and watching TV.

Rivals

Thankfully the mighty U's were on and I got to watch us play local rivals Histon. The most exciting part of the game was that for potentially the first time in history, there were TOO MANY Cambridge fans.

Ok this is mainly because Histon's ground only holds around seven people, but what a joy to see fans climbing trees and standing on a conveniently placed hill (and considering there are at the most three hills in Cambridgeshire, this was particularly lucky hill placement).

A 1-1 draw was disappointing in the end. We scored a screamer, and their equaliser, five minutes from time, was blatantly offside. It was slightly evened up by the fact that Histon were denied a goal by the bobbliest goalmouth in the history of time.

One of their guys rolled it in, and it was in, and then it suddenly hit the post. It was like some sort of optical illusion. So I guess a fair result.

Anyway - there are many reasons why so many fans turned up on Monday night, a local derby, second versus third. And also (and this might sound stupid) it's getting pretty close to the business end of the season.

I know I know that, and I know I should know that, and I know it's obvious - but somehow it's kind of crept up on me.

Perhaps I've been concentrating on a new job, albeit a football related one! But only looking at the tables this morning made me realise there isn't long to go now.

I guess this column in short can be written in one sentence - I'm excited about the rest of the season.

Exciting

Perhaps that isn't surprising, but suddenly I'm looking forward to the Champions League for example. The opening round is dull. I don't care. But now, the draw is exciting - the potential match ups are great, and I want to stay in and watch it.

I know league games are actually equally important regardless of when they come in the season - but it all seems to matter more now - especially as nothing is decided, apart from the Carling Cup of course.

Well done to Man U. Especially after I knocked them out after the first leg of the semis against Derby. I just hope that nothing is completely decided until the last day of the season. That'll be an exciting day.

Right, I'm off to have lunch with my mate David. You can see more exciting updates like that on my Twitter page. It's truly fascinating.

Have a good week. Keep on pointing.
