It's on!
The wait is nearly over

The mighty U's have won 24 of their 45 matches, but I'm yet to see us win this season. I've not been a lucky charm.

Quotes of the week
A while back Nick Owen was on the show as one of the fans of the week. What a legend. And how brilliant that they won the JPT the other week.
After the show we were talking about the reality that they were going down - and sadly that happened the other day. I was trying to explain to Nick, that while it was sad and annoying, it didn't, in the long run, actually matter.
I tried to explain that as a Cambridge fan, I've got used to us being in the Conference, and that actually my life hasn't changed dramatically as a result.
Nick and Helen both disagreed with me. Nick just wouldn't have it on any count.
Helen's main theory was that if you've missed a game and you're driving somewhere the radio goes straight from League 2 to the Scottish Premier League, and you have no way of knowing how you got on. This is especially true for people like me who haven't got round to learning how to get on the internet from your phone.
The Mighty U's
Helen also pointed out that Nick Owen is the chairman of his club, goes home and away, and is possibly a bigger fan than I am. Which is probably fair enough. I love Cambridge United, but I prefer to play than watch - as you've gathered from the number of self-indulgent blogs about my team (incidentally we drew 1-1 on Saturday. I was nothing short of dreadful, like a lump of lead).
And on a Tuesday I play with the Soccer AM boys - which means I haven't been able to go to that many games.
The mighty U's have won 24 of their 45 matches, but I'm yet to see us win this season. Starting off with losing at home to Torquay when I invited Helen to the Abbey, I've not been a lucky charm.
Anyway - I realised on Friday night that I had actually been talking absolute nonsense to Nick Owen. Because Burton have been so far ahead in the Conference, I hadn't really thought about automatic promotion.
Chance
But suddenly - if they lost on Friday, and we won on Saturday, we'd still have the chance of winning the League.
My housemate JK and I watched as Oxford held on with 10 men against Burton, getting butterflies every time Burton lumped the ball into the Oxford box. When the board went up and it said five minutes of injury time, we were furious, almost jumping up and down as much as Fergie when Mike Riley didn't give that penalty on Sunday (for the record, I reckon it wasn't a stonewaller).
A 1-0 win for Oxford, and we could still do it. Saturday, my birthday, as I've already mentioned I was a disaster on the pitch, but came off to find the U's won 2-1 at Salisbury.
So it is on. Cambridge need to beat Altrincham, and then I have to pray that Torquay manage to beat Burton. Sometimes you wonder if football is scripted, and this is one of those times. Until this season Torquay meant very little to me. Now they're a rival. I'd be quite happy if they came up too, but it's ironic that I need Helen to do me a favour.
Excited
We do need to win 4-0 I think, but now I'm just too excited about the prospect of being a league club again. It's been four years since we went down. Burton are struggling, Torquay need to win, Altrincham have nothing to play for. It could happen.
And I would like to make a plea to Altrincham. You have nothing to play for. So don't play for anything. Don't get all relaxed and play good football. Don't do anyone else a favour. Just don't turn up. Don't bother. Think about it. The last thing you need is an injury before you go away for the summer. Just trot about the pitch doing nothing. Thanks.
Anyway finger's crossed. Have a good week. See you Saturday.
And just so you know - my birthday party was great. I kissed someone I shouldn't, I proposed to someone I shouldn't, cried tears of joy to someone I shouldn't, and I think that was it - at least I hope that was it.
