Not my day
Becks and Gordon Brown cheer Max up... a little
Last updated: 21st May 2009
I didn't ask Becks if he fancied coming on the show - thought I'd play it cool... So next step is to become his best mate, without becoming a stalker (it's a fine line).

Quotes of the week
Right. OK. I know. We lost. To Torquay. I'm sad about it. I don't really want to talk about it anymore. All you need to know is that we were better than them.
Helen texted me half an hour in saying as much. And then they scored. Against the run of play. And that was that. A dodgy sending off, they scored another and we're not in the football league. Again.
I'd love to say that winning the pub quiz that evening in Oval took the edge off the defeat. But it didn't. We won £25 but gambled double or quits and lost on Play Your Cards Right.
I guess it wasn't my day.
There's nothing like seeing your fans walking up Wembley way. But having experienced Cambridge winning once there in 1990, and losing twice, in consecutive years - I can confirm that losing there makes you not want to go back for a long time.
World Cup
So it was with reluctance that I got out of bed to go Wembley on Monday, less than 24 hours after the defeat, to help out with the launch of England's bid to host the 2018 World Cup.
When someone says do you want come to Wembley and meet David Beckham, Gary Lineker, Sir Geoff Hurst, Sir Bobby Charlton and the Prime Minister, you say yes.
So I said yes.
But the number of people who came up to me to commiserate didn't make it feel any better.
Although at least some could empathise - the chairman of MK Dons Peter Winkleman - especially, after their mammoth penalty shoot out defeat to Scunthorpe in the League One play-off.
Teams lose in play-offs. Three out four from each division. It might sound obvious, but it's nice to know that we're not alone. And there'll be three sides who lose over this weekend, and I feel for them in advance.
Interviews
Anyway, this is probably my last column of the season - and if you'd told me a year ago, before I got the Soccer AM job, that I'd be writing a column for Sky Sports about meeting and interviewing David Beckham and the Prime Minister, I'd have laughed at you.
But that's what happened, and so I better write about it.
Everyone in the last couple of days has asked me what they're like.
Firstly, the Prime Minister. Well chances are, my interview wasn't the most taxing he's faced over the past week. I didn't ask him anything about his expenses for a start, so I guess he was pretty relaxed.
But he seemed to be a decent bloke, with a real passion for football. The press officer with him said she'd try and get him on the sofa next season - which would be exciting.
As for Becks, I interviewed him twice in ten minutes. He might have recognised me the first time, but definitely did the second, when we were surrounded by screaming kids with face paint and Gary Lineker.
I'd like to think the kids were screaming cos I was standing there - but it might have had something to do with the other two. Both were top men, interested in what I was doing, great with the kids and seemed genuinely happy to be there.
I didn't ask Becks if he fancied coming on the show - thought I'd play it cool. I should hopefully be working for the bid team over the next couple of years - I'd love the World Cup to come here.
So next step is to become his best mate, without becoming a stalker (it's a fine line), go out for a nice dinner - perhaps cook him a pasta bake in my rented student flat, and then invite him on the show. It's only a matter of time.
Have a great summer, and see you in August.
Cheers.

I to am feeling the same pain, how could this have happened two years running. The confidence was on a all time high after the fight back against Stevenage. Am geeting fed up of the questions people are asking me "how they get on then ha ha ha" Whats there to laugh about? Oh and talking of stalkers it may seem like we are yours! Had your Autograph outside the cfu van 4 the Stevenage game then my sister spotted you at Wembley and had a photo with you with my son and nephew. Think we will leave you alone now lol

I share you pain Max as I was also at that nightmare ground. My mates at uni who I have been dragging to the pub to watch Cambridge on TV in Hull this year with me even watched it was painful for them. Still there is always next year. Barrow, Altrincham, Kidderminster, Histon, Hayes & Yeading and Tamworth away really get the juices flowing. See you down the Abbey next year

Cheers for the show over the past season Max, been back to the quality of the Lovejoy days, if not better. I'm sure Cambridge will be back in the football league soon, I think its time they opened up another relegation spot from L2 and a promotion spot from the Blue Square, because the difference between the two isn't that significant. Exeter City being a prime example who've just got back into the 3rd tier after a stint in non league.
